"A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" was one of the first novels I read when I was a young girl. The entire story was not sad, but parts brought me to tears. I also saw the movie when I was grown and it still brought me down.

"Charlotte's Web". I cry every time I read it.

I didn't read the book but I did see the movie...once. I could never watch it again.

"Flowers for Algernon" is a powerful book. I got emotional when reading it.

@GoneButNotForgotten I agree! I could never hide my tears when I read Charlotte's Web each year to my 2nd grade students.  Such a wonderful book about true friendship!

Another book I read to slightly older students, 4th or 5th, was Stone Fox.  No matter how many times I read that one, there was no way to complete it without having a tissue handy.
