I finished 2 more books in Louise Penny's series: Kingdom of the Blind and A Better Man.
I'm now caught up with the series and am on hold at my local library for her latest book! I've really enjoyed reading this series this year. It's the 1st mystery series in a while that drew me in and made me want to read the entire series asap.

Interesting reading on the different opinions about "A Tale of Two Cities." I've found that some books I didn't like in high school I now enjoy reading. Probably tastes change as one gets older.
I like everything I've read by Charles Dickens. His descriptions and characterizations are quite good.

@teganslaw wrote:December starts with Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities." It's been years since I read this novel, and it's one of my favorites by him.
@teganslaw I taught this novel many times in my sophomore classes. It was like pulling teeth through the first part, but my students really became engaged in the second and third.
There were so many memorable minor as well as major characters in this novel. My students got a kick out of Miss Pross and Jerry Cruncher.
Enjoy reading!

@Alter Ego wrote:@smoky22 I'm currently listening to Moonflower Murders and am maybe half through with Pund's story. I think I agree with you about the Susan Ryland portion - I like it too, but for the life of me, I don't recall having any strong feeling about her in the first book! I didn't even recall she was the lead character.
@Alter Ego I know they are calling this a sequel, but except for the fact that Susan Ryland is in the first one (Magpie Murders) and there is also an Atticus Pund book, I don't think they have very much to do with each other. Yes, the author of the Pund Books is also hated in the first one, but that's about it. I like this 2nd book better.

Just finished The Plea by Steve Cavanagh, this was a very good crime story! A crime very involved but the author made it easy to understand for us not so smart people, it showed so much corruption in high level positions from lawyer's, police officers & many more, I enjoyed this book!

I just finished The Country Inn Mystery by Faith Martin. Jenny Starling is a traveling cook, and she is working at The Spindlewood Inn for the Regency Extravaganza, which involves historical costumes, amateur dramatics, and food. Jenny is filling in for the permanent cook. The performers all seem to have some type of relationship problem, with the lead actress being somewhat of a troublemaker.
This is book 7 of the Jenny Starling Mysteries, but it was probably my least favorite of the series as the ending just really did not make much sense to me.

A few years ago, I was doing a reading challenge (one task was to re-read a book from high school). I decided to tackle the Two Cities again.
But this time I comprehended it! What a difference that made. So I wound up loving it.
I cannot fault the nun who taught the book. She was very thorough: it was wasted on me, unfortunately.
@insomniac2- well maybe just for the challenge of it, I'll try to read it. I can't even say "again" because I really didn't read it at all. I skimmed enough to write a fairly awful book report but I got a good mark anyway (the teacher loved me lol).
Thanks for sharing your experience.

I just wrapped up The Sleeping Beauty Killer by Mary Higgins Clark and Alafair Burke. I enjoyed the book and will most likely give it 4/5 stars on Goodreads.
On to my next book....
