@teganslaw wrote:I'm halfway through "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath. The book describes Esther Greenwood,a young intern at a fashion magazine, slowly entering into madness. Her thoughts are confused, yet seem rational to her and she loses all sense of sanity.
I never read Plath's poetry and this book is considered a classic yet so controversial it has been banned in certain areas. Had to see for myself what it was all about. The book is compelling and Plath does a good job describing Esther's thoughts and reactions. There are some racist and stereotypical remarks. The book was published in 1962, so it was a sign of the times. I'm not really connecting with Esther, so while I find the regression interesting yet troubling I don't feel empathy for her. I have no idea what I would rate this book. Maybe I have to see how it ends first.
Wow. I read this book SOOOO long ago I can't remember it. I kind of remember it not going into her illness enough but I could be mixing it up with another book. Let us know how you liked it.

All That We Are by Mariah Stewart was #3 in the Wyndham Beach series. It wasn't as good as the first two though. A little draggy and too long.

I finished "The Bell Jar."and have mixed thoughts on it. The book ended abruptly and I didn't think there was any closure on what will happen to Esther Greenwood. Has she improved or will she never be cured? The descriptions of her madness were interesting, but there were times when certain scenarios popped up with no warning. The book went from the past to present. It seems the author was writing about the way Esther's mind worked.
I wasn't satisfied with the ending and can't recommend this book.

End of October slump it seems for me. Did not finish Fiona Davis' The Dollhouse nor Long Island by Colm Toibin. I might be able to get one more book in before the end of the month.

just started Fox by Joyce Carol Oates. It's extremely long and her writing requires close attention. So it will take me several weeks probably. I only read in short spurts.

I just finished Masked Prey Lucas Davenport Novel by John Sanford. I really enjoyed this novel. I love these thrillers but the last few books have been just okay. This one reminded me of the old Lucas Davenport novels. I gave it a 4/5 rating on goodreads.
