Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century

[ Edited ]

I finished this book recently.  I guess I skipped over the word "surviving" in the title because I sort of expected it to be about people/retirees taking to the open road for enjoyment.  Turns out it's a little bit darker than that.

These people who have taken to the open road have done so because it's pretty much the only way they can afford to live.  The book covered the stories of several people, how they got "there," the jobs they did/do along the way to (in some cases) supplement their social security checks.

I found it very interesting.  It made me think...would I want to have that kind of life?  Could I do it?  Maybe not so bad if by choice...if one had other options, could leave the road when it got too difficult or tiring.  It would be very freeing, that's for sure...not weighed down by "stuff" and responsibilities in general.

If forced by circumstances...not so attractive.

If interested, find it here:

Not at my age.

I was a gypsy when I was young, but after I started a family I put down roots.

I'm surrounded by immediate and extended family, not going anywhere

@esmerelda  it sounds interesting.  I put it on waitlist.  Not my usual type of book, so we'll see.  Thanks for the review.
