Re: JANUARY 2025 READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?

Just finished The Third to Die, Allison Brennan, a book about a serial killer.

The first half was better than the last.  I did a speed read of the last quarter of the book.  Too long.  I rated 3.5*/5*.  Goodreads more generous at 4.18*/5*.

Storyline below.

An edgy female police detective... An ambitious FBI special agent. Together they are at the heart of the ticking-clock investigation for a psychopathic serial killer. The bond they forge in this crucible sets the stage for high-stakes suspense. Detective Kara Quinn, on leave from the LAPD, is on an early morning jog in her hometown of Liberty Lake when she comes upon the body of a young nurse. The manner of death shows a pattern of highly controlled rage. Meanwhile in DC, FBI special agent Mathias Costa is staffing his newly minted Mobile Response Team. Word reaches Matt that the Liberty Lake murder fits the profile of the compulsive Triple Killer. It will be the first case for the MRT. This time they have a chance to stop this zealous if elusive killer before he strikes again. But only if they can figure out who he is and where he is hiding before he disappears for another three years. The stakes are higher than ever before, because if they fail, one of their own will be next...

Re: JANUARY 2025 READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?

Let me chime in about Danielle Steel's books. I've been reading her since 1980 and there have been a few that I didn't like as much as her others.

I have read over 100 of her books so far.  I started collecting them from used book stores, library book sales, etc. but it became too burdensome since I knew I'd never catch up with them.

I do agree that her earier books were better but I still enjoy them since they are easy to read and sometimes when I can't find a book I want to read she's my go to.  A lot are too romance-y and fluffy and repetitive but some are serious and not a lot of romance.  I can't think of any right now but one was a sort of current one.

Re: JANUARY 2025 READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?

I still have about 50 of her novels in hardback and will never part with them.  All from the '80's and 90's.  Danielle Steel could take me away better than Calgon in the bath ever could.

She lost her mojo for quite awhile so I stopped buying hardback and waited for paperbacks.  Then it was library only.  It was when she wrote Blue that I felt like she was finding her way back.  But there still have been a few duds this past decade.  But all authors have some that are not a win.

I enjoyed Zoya and right now I have Joy on my coffee table but I have not gotten to it yet.

Re: JANUARY 2025 READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?

[ Edited ]

CHER: PART 1, is excellent. Throw away most of what you know about her. Or at least I was surprised. And I am 77, and grew up with her in headlines and never missed her tv shows and such.  She spends a great deal of book on her birth, childhood and growing up. Then, her meeting Sonny, and his hold over her.  Their rise to stardom, loosing everything and climbing back again. Then, Repeat ...and their split. Sonny controlled everything, what she did, who she talked to.  She was never allowed to read contracts, have a check book, or access to money.  In fact one bit surprised me.  When they hit it big, had money ..she wanted to go to Europe.  He said no, because he told her what purpose would it serve?  It wouldn't advance their careers.  He loved her, she loved him, but she was cheated on, controlled and did what she was told. She was allowed 3 friends. Anyway I highly recommend it. I used AUDIBLE, then read the book. The book is read in part by Cher, and then by the woman who portrayed her in a play. The reason she had help reading the entire book, all 18 hrs was..... her dyslexia is so bad, it was a struggle to do what she did.  Anyway, it moves along at a good pace.  Her early childhood was hard, and poor.  I am glad I read it.  Stardom isn't always what we think!!
