Do you always read them?
I recently returned a mystery novel half read. It had too much graphic violence, which I wasn't expecting. It also had about a dozen "foreign" names from five different countries, and I couldn't keep them all straight, even though I made notes as I went along.
I suspect this writer hoped this series continuation would result in a blockbuster-type movie.
I won't force myself to read books that don't engage me.
I took it back and got others to read.

@Tinkrbl44 No I take out way too many to read them all. I am a mood reader and like to have options. I love my libraries!! Have a good day.

I read about 99.9% of them. But I usually order them in advance so I know what I am getting.

I generally put the books I want to read on hold or read books from authors I know I like so I finish them. However, there have been times when life happens and I didn't have time to finish them as new books have a two week return policy and can rarely be renewed as there is a waiting list. When this happens, I put them on hold again and wait for them to become available so I can finish them.
i used to force myself to finish books I wasn't crazy about, but no more. I return them.

I do, and I love going to my library to find new books.
I finish some, not others.
Like OP and the other commenter...a) I don't want to try to plod through just to finish a book I decide I don't like or isn't written well.
b) I too am a "mood reader"....I also have a habit of starting about 4 books at a time! And "my eyes are bigger than my stomach", (or mind), when I go choose books and I come out with several...more than I'm usually able to finish all in a few wks.
c) and last but not least....I'm a slow reader....I'm not dumb, lol....but definitely an "artsy, ADD" type brain and my mind wanders and I "imagine" as I read and it just slows me down. Plus I swear after all the internet/online activity, my brain's gotten re-wired to read fast stuff online rather than slow down, focus and read. Frustrates me...going to work on that somehow. Anyone else notice that?
Recently, I had taken a book out I didn't finish the first time, because I was reading other things too. (non-fiction..."The Light Between Us") I was 2/3 done, then left it behind in Cape Cod! Had to wait for the owner of the Inn to ship it back, and it was already 2 wks overdue when I got it, so I returned it, unfinished...again! I still want to finish that book. Also want to read her other book "Signs."
So yes, and no, I don't always finish them. But most times I do.

Most times I do. I'm usually ordering my books. I got away from reading the last few years. Life happens. I recently retired and moved, and I know I will be reading much more this fall and winter. My library is great and shares the borrowing with the entire city libraries. My library has great hours and the staff is just the best. They are my most supported charity.

I belonged to a book club but quit going. The library could only reserve older books for us, borrowing from other libraries. They did give us a month to read them and they were due the day after we met. Normally it is the usual two weeks.
Some books I enjoyed and others were a chore. I felt like I was doing homework to finish the book monthly. I tend to prefer Historical Fiction, Biographies and they liked SFi which was not my thing along with those beach reads.

You did exactly what I would have done. Life is short.

@Tinkrbl44 I agree with you about "forcing" myself to read books!
I started reading Women Talking by Miriam Toews and could only get half-way through the book!
Very sad and disturbing.

Like others have described, I either order books whose reviews I have read, or I browse. I do occasionally pick up a book that disappoints and I put it down. There are too many good books out there to justify reading books one doesn't like.
