Nobody has mentioned the wonderful classic book: The Haunting of Hill House!
There is an old black and white movie of it that is fun but the book is better!

Can anyone recommend a book that you had to read with all the lights on? Something you would never read while alone in the house?? It can be fiction or non-fiction.
You've got to check out Chapel Street by Sean Paul Murphy. It just came out this month. I loved it so much, I read it in one day. I posted about it earlier this month on this forum.

I am not really into these types of books anymore, but I use to really love horror books. King, Koontz, Saul, just to name a few.
I remember being in the Navy and I was stationed on a ship. If you lived on the ship you slept in berthing areas. They are racks, with a curtain that you pull closed with an internal light overhead in your bunk if you want to read at night. I was lying in my rack reading It by Stephen King really late one night, it's so quiet that you could hear the ventilation system. I became convinced that something was standing outside of my closed curtains. I had to use the bathroom and would not pull back the curtains to get out of my rack to go the the head (bathroom). I knew I was being silly but I just could not.

I can't read those books anymore if I want any chance of being able to sleep at night. I think I check under my bed for months after that.

Edgar Allen Poe has written some of the best horror stories. Recommended if one wants to be scared.

Thank you everyone!! I've made a list of your suggestions that I havent read and will be checking ebay out to get them!! I've rented a beach house for the next 2 months to spend a little time alone. I love the beach and get recharged by sand, sun and waves. Thought it would be fun to take some really scary books with me and y'all have given me some great ideas!! 🙂
I was deeply affected by Dust, by Charles Pellegrino. It's about dust mites becoming predators of humans. From 1999.
It has mixed reviews, but the concept is terrifying.
(Can you take me with you to that beach house? It sounds absolutely heavenly! Have a wonderful time.)

The Serial Killer's Daughter by Lesley Welsh.
Don't confuse this with another book by same title that is true story. This book was hands down one of the most twisted stories I've ever read and that speaks volumes! Just about the time you think you might have figured out all the plot...
I'll let you decide
