There's a saying in Alcoholics Anonymous: "An addict can convince you a dog is a cat."
I, too, watched all his promotional appearances for his memoir and was absolutely convinced he was sober.

Well, I guess it's possible he WAS sober when doing the appearances and using when he wasn't out doing promotions.  

 

Most addicts are pretty good at hiding what they don't want you to see.
