GRANTCHESTER: books and TV series

[ Edited ]

I have been completely enthralled with the PBS "Grantchester" series. Naturally, I needed to check out the books as to their value.

I HEARTILY RECOMMEND THE BOOKS. They must be read in order (check out Fict-Fact.com), however. (The end of the second book already takes us farther than the TV series does.)

If you love the show, you'll love the books. I found them all in my local library.

ADDED NOTE: The books are by James Runcie, and all the titles begin with the name Sidney Chambers.

Does anyone know if there will be a new season? There was talk that the gorgeous vicar was too much in demand for other projects to return for another Grantchester season.

Vivian, I haven't heard whether there will be a fourth season, but I certainly hope so! And I really want the main characters to remain.

Just a note to mention that after the first Grantchester book, the books and the tv series go in very different directions as far as Sidney's personal life and who he ends up with.

That said, I enjoyed the books and the tv series too.

@dawg lover  that's what I was going to say.  After the first season, the books and the tv series are very different.  I actually like the books better, although I faithfully watch the show too.

Re: GRANTCHESTER: books and TV series

I just finished the second book-"The Perils of the Night" & was surprised at the ending! I don't think Sydney in the novel is as handsome as the actor who portrays him on tv.Inspector Keating's role is larger also-any other opinions?

The ending of the second book amazed me--it went far beyond the series. I'm now in the middle of book 4, and having a great time reading.

The books don't describe Sidney in enough detail to let me know just how handsome he is. But I do admit that the actor's great looks in the PBS series are a bonus!

Not only do the books move the story along, but I love the side spiritual references and the philosophies described (that's what also adds depth to the Ladies' Detective Agency series).

As for Keating, he is not as prominent a character (especially at the point I'm at.)  But Sidney has more responsibilities; he still spends a fair amount of time getting to the bottom of criminal issues.

I really, again, recommend that lovers of the show seek out the books by James Runcie!

I agree with everyone: loved the PBS series, but found the books

to be even better!   Found some of them in the Edward Hamilton

Bookseller catalog discounted...worth checking out if you'd like

to own your own copies.
