@Annabellethecat66 wrote:I forgot to say that ever since my daughter was born I have given her pop-up books. They started out being for children but over the years they are mostly for adults as they are very beautiful and intricate.
She's now 36 and she told me recently when she's ill or having a down day she gets some out and looks at them. She said they take her to a wonderful place and make her feel good.
I recently had a conversation with one of my granddaughters (she's 13). She goes to a gifted school and has a very high IQ so I've always been able to talk to her like an adult. She reads constantly.
The conversation was about 'Do you prefer reading from a computer (like E-books)'. She said, "I'm like you Grandma, I'd always rather be able to turn the pages in a book than download the book and read it that way". She said, "I like to feel the paper when I turn the pages and be able to easily go back and reference something". That's exactly what I like. I didn't tell her but her Mom, (my oldest daughter) was exactly like that too. They are now traveling in France and England for a few weeks and she said her mom told her "You'll never be able to carry all of those books with you. You must download them". She said, "Grandma, I told her, I'll leave my clothes home, wear my sister's clothes to make room for my books". Ha! I thought that was funny.
I think people don't understand why some prefer to have an actual book in their hands. I gather that's the way the OP and maybe others feel. I do understand. I'm so worried with the way publishers are disappearing that this will one day happen. Ugh!
I hope I didn't get O/T on this but to me it's similar. If I did, I apologize...Annabelle.
@Annabellethecat66I could never get away from a book!

having worked in book publishing for over 10 years in Boston and New York, i share a love of books with many - the feel/quality of the paper, the beauty of the bindings, the weight /dimensions of the book, etc. i have many first editions and special presentation editions done by publishers as special promotions for authors like Lillian Hellman, the First on the Moon astronauts, etc. i use a Kindle for classics or for when i feel i don't need to have the book on my shelf.

Yes. I have a complete set of Nancy Drew matte cover books, the cookbook, and several books about the franchise. I also have all of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books as well as several books about the author. Those are quite sentimental to me.
There are other books that I collect, though none of them are rare or of great value, I just enjoy them. I have over 5,000 books (almost all of them purchased used.)

No first editions or coffee table art books, no. When I was a pre-school teacher, I collected children's books.
Now I collect books signed by the author. Austin is home to one of the nation's best book festivals, the Texas Book Festival, and an amazing local bookstore that has many author signings every month. I have books signed by Lauren Bacall, Jimmy Carter, Dan Rather, Michael Connelly, Sue Grafton, Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield, James Ellroy, Dave Barry, Juan Williams, Steve Inskeep, John Hodgman, and more.

Yes. All types of books. Just love the way they feel in my hand...looking at them visually....especially the old books-
Most hard cover, and many leather bound....collect dictionaries and have and cherish my grandfather’s old law books.......Approximately 2,500 and feeling envious of the poster with 5,000-
Just a little hint I learned-though it's beautiful to view a bookcase with lights-it’s suggested not to use lights in your book cases-the light and heat dry the books-especially if you have collected the old books....
My most favorite gift to receive is a beautiful book..........
Enjoy your collecting....you'll never feel lonely with a book....nor feel slighted for not having had a learning experience or travel opportunity at your fingertips...
