Re: Do You Prefer to Read an E-reader or Book?

Another "old dog" here. I love the smell of a brand new book, love the feel of the pages. My problem is that I only read a book once usually and end up with books that I don't know what to do with. All our thrift shops here are filled to the brim with books. I share some with friends who have Little Free Libraries. Some of my sweet memories from my childhood are spending hours in our public library. I have bad eyes and reading on a computer screen is difficult for me. I start getting anxiety when my book stash gets around 3 or 4 unread books so I imagine an e-reader would be good but I just can't give up my books Smiley Happy

Re: Do You Prefer to Read an E-reader or Book?

Two years ago I would have said books but when I had an immobolizer on my right arm with a broken shoulder and 2 arm breaks holding a book and turning pages was  a real pain.  Also since I could not do things for months I was accumulating too many books so got a Kindle and found how practical it is.  I can have many books stored and when I finish one there is always another immediately available.  Way easier on the eyes and adjustable font as well as easier to read outdoors in the sun.  Can read so many for free but can also buy ones to be stored in the cloud that can be reread or shared.

Re: Do You Prefer to Read an E-reader or Book?

I still love books. I have many around, and read and reread some. AND...I love my Kindle too. Especially when traveling (lighter, easier to pack along with me) and at night in bed, with the light, even with my readers, I see the Kindle better then. I really do like them both, and glad there still seems to be a place for both of them. Plus, I just love libraries too...haven't been lately since pandemic, but still get books from there.

Re: Do You Prefer to Read an E-reader or Book?

I ran out of room for bookcases years ago - but I still buy hard copies - depends on the book.  Mostly KIndle versions - but still lots of books.

Not necessarly in a logical order ... but ...

  • Easy to make notes, highlight, online dictionaries and translation, and Wiki.  If's easy to lookup obscure locations and names.  I can sort the books and file them into categories - like a library card catalog.  The access to these is really important for me.  You can specify which language dictionaries you want to access.
  • Search capabilities to find a book in my library, a word in a book, or a book in the Kindle store.

  • Instant gratification - buy it and start reading it in about 30 seconds.

  • Usually -  less expensive than a book.
  • I can change type size, type face, background lighting.

  • I can carry hundreds of books around with me - and it weighs almost nothing.

  • No bookmarks necessary - Kindle remembers the last page I read.

Re: Do You Prefer to Read an E-reader or Book?

Also...two more discerning factors...some books I want the physical book for keeps (though I've limited space so I'm selective now, and really have enough)...I have some special editions, or signed copies etc.

Kindle...certain books I don't want to wait once I decide to read it...and with Kindle I don't have to.

Re: Do You Prefer to Read an E-reader or Book?

I much prefer my kindle.  It is lighter and I can easily adjust the font size.  However, ebooks have gotten expensive.  Newly published books are often $14.99.  So I try to get new books from my public library.  I can reserve books months before their publication and am usually one of the first in line when the books become available.

Borrowing ebooks from the library is good for older books, but new books have very long waiting lists.

Re: Do You Prefer to Read an E-reader or Book?

If it is a beautiful book, or a beautifully bound classic book, I like paper and binding.

It is is a novel, something informational without beautiful illustrations I prefer a Kindle or my Mini IPad.  Books are too expensive and take up too much space, and I don't check out books from the library any more.

Kindles are fabulous because they are easy to read and you can store thousands of books with almost no space.

Re: Do You Prefer to Read an E-reader or Book?

I prefer books, and since I am a voracious reader.  I primarily get my books from the library.

I do own a kindle, but I don't enjoy it. I am always worried about when I need to charge it. I don't like not knowing where you are in the book and that little number at the bottom of the screen is not the same as actually holding a book and knowing where you are with it.

I use my Kindle primarily for when I travel. It's much easier to download a few books to be able to read versus, having to pack two or three books

No preference.  I am happy with both.  I get all my books from the library so electronic is easier, I just have to download.

Re: Do You Prefer to Read an E-reader or Book?

Definitely a kindle or tablet.  I'm a voracious reader and I like having books readily available and no dusting.  I love to cruise and a kindle is a dream.  Once we took a 32 day trip from Rio up the Amazon and back, Devils Island, Caribbean, Florida to NYC; I read a book a day ( can you imagine toting all those around? Love reading a book review in NYT and having it instantly in my hands. Thank you Jeff Besos!
