Do You Get To Keep Your Prime Reading Books?

I am a first time subscriber to Amazon Prime, and I have gotten quite a few Kindle books from their Prime reading program. If I decide not to continue with Prime, do I still get to keep these books, or are they automatically deleted from my Kindle? Thanks.

I would think once you download them on to your device they are yours.  If they are still sitting in the cloud, then I guess they could disappear.

I think it depends where you save it.

@grammarqueen, I have had Prime for years.  Unless you choose to delete the books, they are there permanently.  If you have Kindle Unlimited, you can only have 10 books at a time.  If you have 10 in your library on Unlimited, then you have to start deleting books, one at a time, if you want to select another book.

Here’s the phone number for Amazon Customer Service. Might be perfect place to call for answers to questions about their policies and practices.

That's the first place I looked, and I Googled it. Unfortunately it's the one question they don't answer!

Regular prime items you pay for and are yours.  If you are referring to the kindle unlimited program, that limits you to ten at a time max, and if you discontinue, the ones you have downloaded are deleted automatically the next time you sign on.

The books you pick out of the prime choices are basically rentals, you do not own them.   It's pretty much like KU (Kindle Unlimited).    As others say 10 at a time, and some must be returned to get new ones.

Now kindle first is another thing.   At the beginning of each month you get a choice of 6 books (usually new writers).   These you get to keep.  Sometimes there's pretty good books in there.   I usually wait until the end of the month and see how the reviews are looking before I pick.

I've never given up Prime, so I don't know for sure, but my guess is yes, they can delete it from your account and delete it from your device the next time you connect to wi-fi. They can - and do - update books in the cloud and in your device when changes are made. I know one person who reported that either his Kindle or Audible player had content deleted when a new version of the book came out. Amazon (who owns Audible) deleted the old version of the book but did NOT replace it with the new one. The person had to contact Amazon to have the new version added to his account and then had to download the new version.

You could prevent them from deleting the books from your actual device by not connecting to wi-fi until you finish the book(s), but you would not be able to download any new books during that time.
