Re: Books - Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee

My DH is at the library getting his copy and I intend to read it and just make up my own mind about this book.

Lori, I am not going to argue with you, but being from AL where Harper Lee and both of these stories are based, Harper Lee will ALWAYS be the one who made To Kill A Mockingbird one of the best novels ever written, not the editor, whoever it was!

EW just came in the mail and they gave it a D+. One comment the reviewer made was it was the first draft that Lee's editor Tay hohoff read and she said the flashbacks to scout were the novel. And that hohoff spent years coaxing these bursts of genius into a very different book. Something that is unheard of today. I don't think I want to read it now.

It's unheard of today because the publishing houses are conglomerates and many are publicly traded.  They can no longer afford to find a young talent like Hohoff found Lee and nurture her for a long time, coaxing her best work out of a weak first draft.

There are still editors and they still shape books and in many cases have a great deal of influence on the work, but a weak first drat like GSAW would, in today's climate, I think just garner scores of rejection letters and no interest.

I don't want Scout to grow up or read more.

Why wopuld I want to spoil, or alter, the beauty of the first book?   It was too wonderful.

It would be like GWTW Part II...

some stories just need to stand alone in our memories.

To Teainlondon, I'm surprised you said you've read "the stories of Miss Lee."

You do know that she didn't write any, don't you?
