Book description turnoffs

[ Edited ]

What in a book description turns you away from a particular novel?

For me ~

a long, convoluted description
coming-of-age
dystopian / sci-fi / fantasy

Re: Book description turnoffs

sci-fi, serial killers, graphic blood and gore, after a death in the family a woman goes back home and "finds herself" or discovers a "family secret!"  I also don't want to read about sad pet stories because I love animals.

Re: Book description turnoffs

ones that telegraph the story and give spoilers

Some reviewers seem to want to write a book report instead of a book review

Oh where shall I begin?

Books that compare themselves to "Gone Girl" (as so many do)! Sorry but that's a big turnoff since I disliked Gone Girl!

Descriptions like "sweeping saga." To me that means a book that's at least 600 pages. Not interested.

I'm not terribly interested in books that take place in France (don't ask me why because I honestly don't know).

I know this is shallow, but certain names of female main characters turn me off, such as "Charity," "Piper," and females with male names like Buddy and Sammy.

And I love "coming-of-age!

The ones that turn me off are sci-fi, romance, saga and fantasy.

A well known book by Ruth Rendell.  Probably her best.  The title is: "A Judgement In Stone".  It gives away the entire plot in the opening lines.  It was one the most suspensful books I ever. read  You knew it was coming, but not when.  And when it did...wow...
