Behind Closed Doors thriller question (spoiler alert)

I just finished reading Behind Closed Doors. I read the reviews and everyone seems to dislike the ending, including me. But, I must be dumb as a doornail, because I didn't get it.

It seems she got away with her husband's murder, but I don't see why Esther was helping her with her excuses and what happened to her sister, Millie. Millie should have been safe in her school. Could someone please enlighten me what the ending means. Thanks.
