She is the author of Nickel and Dimed a book I read and was really impressed by it. I especially remember the part where she poses as a Merry Maid and was given one rag which she was expected to use all day in wiping down counters and other places. She couldn't believe it.
She passed away from a stroke.

She was an extrordinary social just warrior. Here are the last two sentences of her obit in the NY Times:
Ms. Ehrenreich said she believed that her job as a journalist was to shed light on the unnecessary pain in the world.
“The idea is not that we will win in our own lifetimes and that’s the measure of us,” she told The New Yorker, “but that we will die trying.”

That's so sad to hear. Her books play an important part in understanding the socioeconomic landscape of the socioeconomically disadvantaged.
