Re: AUGUST 2023 READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?

@Oznell , good to hear Patricia Cornwall has gotten better.  Her earlier books were so good.  Off to find this one!  Thanks for posting.

I read The Only One Left by Riley Sager.  This is a Gothic chiller about a young caregiver assigned to work for a woman accused of a Lizzie Borden-like massacre decades earlier.  The setting is a crumbling mansion high above the Maine coast. The book was very intriguing in the beginning, then it bogged down a little, and then WOW.  The last third of the book has twist, upon twist, upon twist.  This author has been hit or miss with me but this turned out to be a fun read.   Don't try to analyze it too much.

That was a great read.

Agreed, a good read.

Re: AUGUST 2023 READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?

I haven’t posted in a while, so here’s my recent reads:

OBSESSED by James Patterson (latest and best! in the Michael Bennett series)
PEG AND ROSE STIR UP TROUBLE by Laurien Berenson (#2 in the series- much better than #1)
PINK LEMONADE CAKE MURDER by Joanne Fluke (not so great)
I’m currently reading THE COLLECTOR by Daniel Silva. Very good so far.
Next up are HONEY DROP DEAD by Laura Child’s, THE PARIS ASSIGNMENT by Rhys Bowen, and A QUESTIONABLE CHARACTER by Lorna Barrett.

The Birthdays by Heidi Pitlor was a sort of dysfunctional family in one of the son's summer house in Maine for their father's 75th birthday.  Two of the son's wives were pregnant and their daughter too.  It was an ok book.  It was a fast 2 day read.

Today I finished Justice Redeemed by Scott Pratt.  This is about a lawyer who is wrongly convicted of murder.  It was great!  The pace was quick, the characters were smart, and the plot was very interesting.  It reminded me of early John Grisham books.  I recommend it.  This is book one of the Darren Street series.  It is available on Kindle Unlimited.

Over the last few weeks I have read the first books of six different series.  This is the only one that made me want to binge read the rest of the series.  I immediately ordered book two.

@Lilysmom1 I read Everyone Here is Lying and thought it was ok, but I had some problems with it. I do not want to give anything away so i will leave it at that. Also the ending was bothersome to me, although I do not know where I would have gone with it.

You need to read the 1st book in this series The Silent Corner so you understand why Jane Hawk went rogue in the first place.  I hadn't read any of Koontz for awhile but did read this whole series and couldn't get enough of it.  So suspenseful and really opens one's eyes to "things" that may or may not be going on in our current world.

Re: AUGUST 2023 READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?

I tried to listen to FAMILY LORE, but I quickly pulled the plug and returned the Audible after a day in which I had no clue what I just listened to.  Instead, I turned to Reese's monthly pick, TOM LAKE by Ann Patchett.  I think this may have been my first Patchett book, although I've heard of her others (and her Bel Canto was turned into an opera that premiered in Chicago.)  It was really just a simple story - pretty much a mother telling her children about her life.  But, I really enjoyed it.  Meryl Streep narrated the Audible and I wasn't originally thrilled as I thought her voice may be a litle too low for my liking.  But, she is Meryl and I ended up thinking she was the perfect choice.

I'm now listening to an older memoir for Governerd book club in order to participate in the author chat.
