Re: APRIL 2026 READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?

[ Edited ]

Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid wasn't one of my favorites by her sorry to say.  Maybe I'm just not into space.

My 2 favorites are Daisy Jones & The Six and Carrie Soto Is Back.  Really disliked Malibu Rising.

Happy National Poetry Month One and All!

I've managed to read one book of poetry so far this month and a couple other genres.

How About Now: Poems by Kate Baer. A contemporary poet writing about her on-going transformation as children grow older and into middle-age journey.

Winter: The Story of a Season by Val McDermid. The queen of Tartan Noir delivers a personal ode and journey into Scotland's winters and the various celebrations of season.

They Called Us Enemy by George Takei and It Rhymes with Takei by George Takei. These are both in graphic novel format and very well illustrated.

They Called Us Enemy is a memoir recounting Takei's childhood imprisonment within American camps during World War II and the impact. It Rhymes with Takei is a broader memoir and covers more of his acting and personal life beyond the stage.

They Called Us Enemy is the One Read, One Coast selection for Spring 2026 with 140+ West Coast Libraries participating.

Cheers and Happy Reading All!

@abbalulu wrote:

I just finished Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter. She's been around a long time and also wrote the Will Trent series so I'm thinking I must have read her before but I'm just not sure. Anyway, don't read this book it's disgusting and graphic and it gave me nightmares. I don't know how she lived with this book in her head while she was writing it. The only reason I finished it was I needed to know if the two women who were in trouble survived. It's about a family whose oldest daughter was kidnapped and how it affected all of them and also it is about a woman (coincidentally the sister of the kidnap victim) who has a husband with a secret life. I usually pass on my read books to my daughter or a home bound friend but I am actually putting this book in the trash. And I love and cherish books but i wouldn't foist this garbage on anyone else. I don't think I've ever had such a strong negative reaction to a book.

Tell us how you really feel, abbalulu!

Wow. Great review. I wouldn't touch it with a 10ft. pole! Thnx

All the Little Houses by May Cobb is a wicked, hilarious version of "Little House on the Prairie."  Two families, reminiscent of the Ingalls' and the Olesons (of course, there is an evil teen named "Nellie"), are intertwined in scandalous ways.  I couldn't put this dark comedy down and laughed out loud while reading it.  Very entertaining and unique.  This author also wrote The Hunting Wives, which I thoroughly enjoyed as well.

Another dark comedy I recently enjoyed is Best Offer Wins by Marisa Kashino (new author).  A woman stops at nothing, and I do mean nothing, to secure the house of her dreams - which has not yet been listed on the market.  The author includes detailed descriptions of home interiors/exteriors, which I found so interesting.  This is a Good Morning America book, fyi.  I very much look forward to more books from this author!

The River is Waiting by Wally Lamb. A group of us are meeting him in person to discuss the book this summer.

So far, so good, story about a man who accidentally kills one of his twins. From the first coup!e of pages, I knew what was going to happen, but the writing is beautiful and quite moving.

Re: APRIL 2026 READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?

I'm reading "The Frozen River" by Ariel Lawhon.

Fictional novel takes place in 1789 Hollowell Maine. Martha Ballard is a midwife and healer who is called to identify a body frozen in the Kennebac River. She has documented an alleged rape which was caused by two men, one of whom is found in the river. A highly regarded physician undermines Ballard's suspicion of murder by declaring that this was an accidental drowning. She is then determined to find the facts behind the death.

This book was praised, given great reviews and I can see why. I have read less than half and am hooked on the story. Very well written and intriguing so far.
