This spring the KitchenAid® team at QVC is sweet on honey!

We love to use all that golden-sticky goodness in our recipes and it turns out we all have a personal connection to bees and honey!  Laura Weather’s sister has had an apiary for many years and she maintains a large colorful flower garden to support the bees and butterflies.  Marie Levesque is a huge fan of honey with over a hundred jars stashed in her kitchen and her niece works with honey at a monastery.  My sister-in-law and brother have beehives as well and my girls and I got to spend time up-close and personal with their 500,000 fuzzy little winged friends.

Honeybees as you may know are having a tough time; since about 2006, bee colonies have been in decline.  The reason for the decline is not 100% clear at this point, but we do know that bees help our food to grow, and we love food, so we are going to try our best to support the bees!

Did you know?

  • Honeybees are needed to pollinate over a hundred different crops from fruit trees, to nuts, to most of your farm stand favorites!
  • All the worker bees in the hive are females.
  • A single honeybee will visit 100-1500 flowers to gather nectar to take back to the hive!
  • In a season, a hive can produce between 25-70 pounds of honey depending upon the weather, location and strength of the hive.
