My 9-year-old nephew, William, was visiting from California last weekend. As you can imagine, I adore him, and we had a blast.

We played in the snow...

watched his favorite shows, visited a trampoline park, and drank lots of hot chocolate with whipped cream on top.

The night before he had to leave, he asked for a pen and paper to write me a note. What followed melted my heart. He had written three pages that included a letter, jokes, and riddles. All things he was sure I would enjoy -- he was right!

In an age when text messages and emails are the norm, a handwritten letter is appreciated more than ever. Especially one from a 9-year-old. There is something timeless and permanent about taking pen to paper. We all probably have shoeboxes filled with letters and notes that have special meaning. Long after the moment has passed, those written communications are enduring.

I will cherish William’s letter and save it among my most treasured keepsakes.

Long live the art of the handwritten note!

Leah Williams
