Hi, everyone!

Today is #NationalCookieDay so I wanted to share a cookie recipe - with a twist - with you all.  Cookie Wreath Ornaments.

And, speaking of ornaments, you don't have to use them exclusively on your tree.  I decorate with them…everywhere!

Now if you prefer edible place settings at your holiday table, I think you’ll like my Mini Holiday Cookie Wreaths!

Ingredients:

Cookies:

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 5 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cream of tartar

Wreath:

  • 1 tsp water
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tube of writing icing
  • Silver dragees
  • Silver ribbon

Preparation:

  1. Cream the sugar and shortening together. Add the sour cream, eggs, and vanilla. Mix well. Add the dry ingredients and mix well (the dough should not be sticky).
  2. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lay the finished cookie dough out on a lightly floured surface. With a rolling pin, roll out the dough until it's 1/8" thick. Use 2 sizes of star cookie cutters and cut 8 stars, 4 of each size. Transfer the cut cookies onto a baking sheet and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  3. Add 1 tsp water to the egg white and mix. Arrange the stars in circles, alternating between large and small stars. Be sure the points overlap. Brush the dough with the egg wash to adhere and gently press the overlapping dough together to seal. Bake the dough for 15 minutes, or until golden.
  4. Set aside and cool for 30 minutes. Transfer to a cooling rack or another flat surface. Pipe some icing onto the wreath and place dragees or other decorations of your choice onto the wreath. Tie a loose ribbon through the wreath for hanging.

Picture these hanging on your Christmas tree. Or, imagine if you set up a small tree in your kitchen and decorated it with these. Don’t forget about hostess gifts, too. Just get some of those plastic bags at the craft store, put these wreaths inside, and tie up the top with some of the extra silver ribbon. Perfect!
