NFL Week 9: More Than a Game

WEEK 9

One of the most intriguing and inspiring stories of this NFL season is the Indianapolis Colts.  They were the doormat of the NFL last season, finishing with the worst record in the league, they changed coaches and quarterbacks.  Not many people expected much of them this season.  Early in this year, their head coach, Chuck Pagano, was diagnosed with leukemia and had to take an extended leave.  As of my writing this, the Colts are in second place in the AFC South division with a 5-3 record and are riding a three- game winning streak.  Quarterback Andrew Luck just set an NFL record for most passing yards by a rookie quarterback when he threw for 433 yards in leading the Colts over the Miami Dolphins 23-20.  They have left the light on in Coach Pagano’s office until he returns.

Stories like this inspire us all.  The NFL is more than a game and more than points on the scoreboard.  It’s the human stories and struggles that allow professional football to become a window on a microcosm of life.

Another great story this year ties back to the Colts.  Peyton Manning has shown us that he is still one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of the NFL.  It was tough for him when the Colts decided to take Andrew Luck in last year’s draft as their quarterback of the future.  After sitting out last season due to a serious injury, he has come back in a big way.

So, who will be there in February for the Big Dance?  I don’t have a crystal ball but the Falcons, Bears, Texans, Steelers, Giants, and Packers all have a legitimate shot.
