My journey of healing and returning to QVC

by ‎06-27-2016 04:48 PM - edited ‎06-29-2016 12:34 PM

What a journey it's been for the past 3 months!  It was a new experience for me, one that God allowed for His own purposes.  It was the night before Easter, and I was stopped at a red light on my way home, mentally taking inventory of what was in the fridge that I could eat when I got home. Smiley Happy

The next thing I remember was my car getting hit 3 times by other cars, and each time, my face was hitting the top part of the steering wheel.  I remember thinking, "when will this stop?"  A drunk driver rear-ended me going about 55 mph and was accelerating when she hit me.  It launched me into the car in front of me, and it ended up being a 4-car accident.

When it all stopped, I sat there stunned, trying to figure out how badly I was hurt.  I remember thinking, "Hey, I'm still alive...God has something more for me to do."  The skin on my face was getting very tight, and I realized it was from the swelling.  I knew I had hit my face hard, so I wondered if I'd ever be able to work on QVC again, or if my TV career was over.

People came to my car and told me not to move.  In a few short minutes, a police officer got in the passenger side of my car and was digging in the glove compartment for my registration and insurance.  The EMT's were taking me out of my car on the driver's side and putting me into the ambulance, and off to the ER we went.

Over the next couple of days as the shock wore off, I began to realize the magnitude of my injuries as well as the blessing of "it could have been a much worse outcome."  The blessings...I was still alive, I could walk, I could talk,  I didn't break any bones, which several professionals have told me is a miracle.  What I was dealing with was that both eyes were hit, as well as a hard hit to my right cheekbone, a cut on my nose, and I had a serious concussion to the front and back of my brain.  As with most accidents, my neck and back were very sore, and I had injured my left knee and my right ankle.  It affects your whole body head to toe!

Thus began my recovery.  I've spent the last 3 months seeing my doctor, an orthopedic doctor, an opthomologist, a chiropractor, a concussion therapist, a speech therapist, an occupational therapist, and a physical therapist.  I've had a CT scan, 2 MRI's, 2 xrays, but no surgery necessary!  Yay!!!

Everyone assumed I was just lying around resting, but with all the appointments I had to go to, I was pretty busy each day working hard to get better!  I've learned more about the brain and the body than I ever knew before, and it's been fascinating.  I have a whole new appreciation for people with concussions.  I now know how it affects your balance, memory, the way your brain processes thoughts, the fatigue it creates, the emotions that a concussion can bring on such as anger or sadness, and the sensitivity to light and sound.

It's also so encouraging to see how the brain begins to heal as you consistently work with the therapists week after week.  Little by little, the swelling on the body begins to go down, and the bruises start to recede, and you begin to regain strength and energy, and what a great feeling that is!!  I'm not 100% yet, but I'm feeling up to coming back to the Q!  I've missed being with you!  I'll be back on air Wed, June 29, at 9am for 1 hour of Gold Clearance offers, Thurs at 2pm for 2 hours of Diamonique and Saturday at 7pm for 1 hour of Skechers and even the morning of the 4th of July where we have a lot of great shows planned (see program guide).

Those who watch QVC and those I work with are a huge part of my life, so naturally I've missed all of you, and I'll really enjoy being back to doing what I love!  I have received thousands of comments on FB and lots of get-well cards while I've been gone, and I can't begin to thank you enough for all the prayers and encouraging words you wrote to me.  It has meant the world to me!!!

God has a purpose to everything that happens in our lives, and it's wonderful to just rest in that!  He protected me and has been healing me and walking every step of the way with me. The following picture is of the car that hit me. It's scary to see this now and to think how much worse it could have been. Please, please do not do anything behind the wheel which distracts you from driving safely. Life is too precious and a car is a big piece of machinery that should be respected.
