Meet the Newest Member of our Family, Derek!

by on ‎03-08-2017 08:00 AM

Meet the newest member of our family, Derek! After fostering this handsome cat for a few months, he's now officially Norman's brother... and they're already a dynamic duo!

We first met Derek in early November when Norman had an appointment at the vet. Derek had some health issues and had been surrendered by his previous owner. He’d been living in a cage for months. He was 8 years old and full of anxiety. Notice he licked all the fur off his little legs!

Something about him touched our hearts… he seemed like the sweetest thing… and he seemed to like Norman...so we brought him home to foster the week of Thanksgiving.

Norman was super-excited to have a playmate… but Derek spent the first few weeks upstairs, hiding and a little unsure. We did everything we could to make him comfortable. But more than a month in, his anxiety issues were getting worse and he started marking his territory in our house. We were heartbroken and thought we had failed him.  But Christmas was coming and we couldn’t bear the thought of him going back to life in a cage. So we gave him one last shot. A few friends recommended a kitty calming spray… and it actually worked!

Now... it seems like Derek, or as we call him Derek Jeter or Deuteronomy, had been part of our family forever!  He loves Norman!  They nap together...they beg together.... and Derek loves to watch TV!

He is loving, affectionate and funny!  It's a perfect fit!

Oh Katie~  Thank you for sharing your photos and your loving story of your boys. Norman & Derek look like they are so comfortable together :-) And the timing sounds like grand design. When you went to the vet with Norman, who would know that you'd soon be fostering a cat named Derek? Meant to be. Wishing you years of happiness with your two handsome babies!!!

I have no doubt that Divine Intervention had

a hand in making sure that this precious boy

would find his forever home with you and Norman.

I know that Derek will reward you with the

best stuff ever...unconditional kitty love!

I could never be a foster mom...I'd be

a foster failure because once a kitty

comes into my home they are here for

the rest of their lives.

I'm currently mommy to five kitties

all of whom I rescued at different times.

None of them were planned...but at the time

they were each in desperate need and I

wasn't going to turn my back on them.

Sending Derek and Norman lots of kisses...

please deliver!Heart

Thank you for sharing this. I love the pictures that show what loving and caring can do. Just one question though. Why are my eyes leaking?

Norman and Derek are beautiful!  Thank you for sharing these adorable pictures of them.  My mom had a cat and my son named him Derek Jeter, DJ for short.  The Yankees are his favorite baseball team so he helped name the cat.  I love your Norman and Derek too!

Thank you for not giving up on him. As a fellow animal lover/rescuer, I know it can be frustrating at times as they adjust to a new home and can't communicate their needs to us. We don't pick our fur babies; they usually pick us!

HeartHeartHeartHeartHeart  I enjoyed reading about Derek the cat. I am super stoked that Derek found a forever home and that you bonded with Derek. Derek reminds me of our cat, Brooklyn. Brooklyn also has bald spots due to anxiety. She licks and licks until her fur is completely gone. We found Brooklyn, outside, in a very cold Chicago winter (7-years ago). She was probably less than 6-months at the time. Brooklyn is a tuxedo cat (black with a white chest and four white paws -- looks like she is wearing socks). Side Note Here: As a long time volunteer at a no-kill shelter in Chicago, IL, I appreciate reading about people who adopt cats or dogs from an animal shelter. Brooklyn and Annie are BFFs. I love the picture of your dog and Derek sleeping together on the sofa! What a beautiful picture -- it brought a smile to my face. I wish you and your family many years of joy, unconditional love, and many years filled with wonderful, happy memories!

What a beautiful story! As the wife of a veterinarian, I have seen all kinds of abuse done to animals. Two of our three kitties were abandoned, and one was abused. Thank you for loving Derek - he had you at "hello"! So glad to hear the calming spray worked, and the pics of him and Norman together just melt my heart! You have two beautiful boys!

I'm going to have to find out when you're hosting some shows. I'm sure your warm heart and kindness show through in everything you do! Smiley Happy

Fantastic result, so glad he found a great forever home. What calming spray did you use? My boy licks his fur off too from anxiety. Thank you.

Thank you for giving Derek a chance at finding his forever family.  This is such a "makes you feel great" story with a truly happy ending!  I am so happy there are people like you in this world.  This speaks volumes about the type of people you and your husband are.  Thank you for sharing and please give Norman and Derek a hug and a scratch from me and my family of 5 rescued kitties!!

What a heartwarming story!!  Love those pictures of Norman and Derek together!  It's especially sweet to see a cat and dog so comfortable with each other!

I think it's wonderful that you took Derek in and didn't give up on him; you knew in your heart that you were meant for each other.  It' so pitiful seeing the picture of Derek's poor little legs...but then in a later picture, you can see that his fur is starting to grow in again, that must be very comforting to you to know that his anxiety has lessened greatly!  He looks like he's fit right into your family, and how nice for Norman to have a "sibling", too!!

Thank you to you and all of the other posters here who have adopted animals that were unwanted, abandoned, or abused.  You all make this world a brighter place and are an inspiration to others (like me) who would like very much to do the same someday!
