MEET ROSCOE! DAVID DANGLE’S FOX TERRIER

If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you probably know my sweet puppy ROSCOE. He’s my best friend and the love of my life.

On Valentine’s Day 12 years ago I attended the Westminster Dog Show at Madison Square Garden in NYC with friends. I attended the show for fun but in the back of my mind was something Joan had been telling me for years: get yourself a dog! (The only dog I really knew was Joan’s famous little guy Spike, a true gentleman….)

The dog show is quite a fancy affair, with champagne being poured and hundreds of beautiful, world-class, champion dogs competing for Best in Breed and Best in Show. There was one breed that I thought was just outstanding, the smooth fox terrier. I made my decision that night, I was getting a dog and it was going to be a “smooth” (as they are affectionately called by their owners.)

Roscoe came to me through Winnie Stout, a woman who is well known in the smooth fox circles for her beautiful dogs and her rescue efforts with the breed. On more than one occasion over the years, I have been stopped on the street and asked if Roscoe was a “Winnie Stout fox terrier”!

He was the cutest puppy I could imagine and a love affair began that very day!

When Roscoe was 9 months old there was a terrible accident. While walking him in NYC on a Saturday night, Roscoe broke off of his leash and ran into traffic and was struck by not one but two cars. He spent a good amount of time recovering at Animal Medical Center in NYC and the amazing doctors there helped him to a full recovery. It was the absolute worst period of my life, but in the end Roscoe pulled through. Since then, I’ve held him even closer to my heart.

Roscoe has quite the life. He toggles back and forth between New York City and his country house in Pennsylvania not far from QVC. In fact, one of the reasons we built the house was for Roscoe to have land to run around on.

While he is the cleanest, most meticulous dog I have ever known, he does need the occasional bath (chasing those pesky groundhogs in the mud!) It’s actually something that he doesn’t really seem to mind. (And he knows there will be MAJOR treats afterwards….)

Roscoe loves to play dress-up any time of the year. Or, should I say, he tolerates me dressing him up?

He's an awesome dog. About to turn 12 and going strong! He can still wear me out playing fetch on the lawn. Our vet always jokes that he has two speeds: on and off.

Thought I would finish this blog with my favorite picture of my little boy. He’s probably 7 or 8 years old here.
