Looking Back Before Moving On

by ‎12-22-2017 01:12 PM - edited ‎12-22-2017 01:28 PM

So this is my final blog as a QVC Program Host. It is so bittersweet for me as I wrap up my twenty- nine years as a host for this incredible place we call QVC.

I remember leaving Beth, Kirstyn and my unborn baby (Kelsey) in Chicago as I drove east to West Chester, Pennsylvania almost three decades ago. I asked God to please let this job last three years so I could get on my feet financially.  The home shopping industry was still young and I wasn’t sure that QVC would last for three years.   Here I am twenty-nine years later so grateful that it not only lasted but has thrived and become the number one electronic retailer in the world!

Our family a few years after we moved to West Chester, PA.

My first day here the producers had me jump up onto the small rotating set in our old studios and say “hi” to the viewers. I remember my boss at the time, John Eastman, told me the phone representatives received many nice comments from viewers who remembered me from my days at CVN (the Cable Value Network which QVC purchased.)  You, the viewers and customers of QVC, have made me feel welcome and at home ever since.

My mind and heart are so full of wonderful memories. I have interviewed about every childhood idol I ever had on QVC including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Joe Namath, Jim Brown and George Foreman just to name a few from the world of sports.

When it comes to musicians I think of Willie Nelson, Alabama, Darryl Hall and John Oates, Michael McDonald, Smokey Robinson and many others.

I had a brush with royalty the day I trained Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York.  Then there were visits from Hollywood royalty including Charlton Heston, Bob Hope and our beloved Joan Rivers.

QVC led the world into the dawning of the new millennium on January 1, 2000 and I was honored to be the host from Gisborne, New Zealand which is the City of First Light. We were eighteen hours ahead of New York. John Tesh and I were on a beach overlooking the Indian Ocean with a cast of hundreds.  That same year I hosted our Summer Olympic Games coverage from Sydney, Australia for three weeks.

danretireolympics.jpg

There were remotes from Oktoberfest in Germany and the Black Forest presenting Cookoo clocks, hummel figurines and more.  I have been to the big jewelry show in Vicenza, Italy a few times and I studied watchmaking in Switzerland. There have been hundreds of other “unforgettable moments” when I thought how did I get here?

As I write this I realize, once again, how incredibly fortunate and blessed I have been to be a part of this amazing American success story called QVC. But the best memories I have are not of meeting superstars or traveling the world.  They are the memories of coming to work and seeing people I love in the studio and throughout this building.  They are all dear friends who have become family to me.  And I am so grateful for the incredible privilege to spend time with you.  Thank you so much for inviting me into your home for the past twenty- nine years.  What an honor it has been for me.

Thank You seems so inadequate for all that this company and you have given me. You were with me for the birth of my Gavin, Cole and Brooke and you were with me as I said goodbye to Beth, my wife of thirty-one years.

I wrap up this long chapter of my life with a heart that is truly overflowing with gratitude. You may know that I am really bad at goodbyes.  I get all sentimental and emotional.  In fact, I am crying as I write this.  So I am not going to say good-bye.  I am going to say “I’ll see you later….”  You never know when I might stop by on QVC to say hello in the future.  Please stay in touch with me and follow me on my new adventures Dan Wheeler on Facebook and we will continue on this journey we call Life together!  And I hope you will join me for my final show on Friday, December 29 from 10pm eastern to midnight on the Q.  I know that I will need a couple boxes of Kleenex!

I love you and God bless!

Your friend,

Dan Wheeler

Wow, Dan...what a career and life you've had at QVC! ...so many experiences, adventures, people you've met...how wonderful, mostly, to have worked at something you loved, at a company you love with people you considered family, for 29 years! What a true blessing for which it's clear you are so grateful. You've always been so easy to watch..."the nice guy next-door", a sweet, gentleman with a wry sense of humor and fun.  So, yes...you will be missed on air!  But I'm following you on FB, and wishing you the best in this next new chapter.  I will tune into that last show...thank God Rick will be there to balance the tears with his zaniness. Smiley Wink  Keep on keepin' on, Dan~Best to you and congrats on a job very well done. Merry Christmas and a very Blessed 2018!

Dan you were always my favorite from CVN to QVC.  I remember you and Mary Beth went to QVC and Chris Scalon and Alan went to HSN.  Never watch HSN just QVC because I loved to watch you and MB.  I was pregnant with my twins and on bedrest when I came across CVN 30 years ago.  I remember ordering a VHS player as my first order.  You may have sold it to me.  I have been an avid fan yours, MB and QVC since.

I have followed you on FB and cried, laughed, rejoiced with you many times.  I have switched to your new FB page and 'liked' Fearless Faith and looking forward to your new ministry.  I will certainly miss you greatly on QVC.  You have such a good heart and love for God and are such a role model as a husband, father and grandfather many aspire to be.

Congratulations on your retirement from QVC!  And congratulations with your ministry...working for God full time...the greatest job of all!

You are leaving QVC on December 29, 2017. You may be going but will not be forgotten. You were a wonderful host with a lot of charm and spirit. Whatever the furture holds for you will be rewarding because you put your heart and soul into everything you care about. I'm sure your family is so very proud of you and Beth is smiling down from Heaven. I wish you much happiness in the future.

May God Bless you in whatever you choose to do and if you choose to do nothing that's okay too.  God's Peace.

As all have said, you are one of the nicest people and so down to earth. You have shared your struggles and your good times as well over the years.  So much encourgement you have given all of us over the years and positive thoughts.  You certainly will be missed. You are one of the great lights on QVC.  I'm sure the Lord has great things for you in the future. Good luck with your plans and will be praying for you and the next "chapter" in your life. My father used to say, "nothing lasts forever," (even if we wish it could).  times change, people change and life changes.  That is good really. It keeps us growing and changing ourselves.  So, happy retirement, lol, even though I know you aren't really retiring from life yet.  See you later!!

by

Dan you will be missed! It won't be the same at the Q without you but I wish you all the best in

the future!  I have watched you since the beginning and you are a class act!  One that will be difficult

to replace! God Bless you and your family!  See you later!

Viewers don’t really know the hosts on QVC, but we feel as though we do. What QVC understands is that  if we are going to watch people and listen to their opinions as they show us products, we have to like them and see them as friends. In the almost 20 years I have shopped at QVC  I feel exactly as though I know the hosts, not just watch them as actors selling a product.  Personalities cannot help but come through and it makes the experience of watching QVC a personal one.  You have always seemed a decent and kind man, and I will miss you more than I would miss some of my family members ☺️  Good luck and God bless in your future endeavors.  I will watch for news with you and hope you continue to share your family with us.
