In the Kitchen with David - January 16th Show

Hello, foodies...

I've been busy this week putting away the last of the holiday decorations and turning my attention to the new year and our time together in the kitchen. I love the beginning of January as it always inspires me to get in gear with new plans and new goals. I've decided to focus on healthy comfort cooking and recipe ideas for the month of January. This week's In the Kitchen with David is a 3-hour show full of items to help with your cooking resolutions for 2011 and some ideas on healthier foods for you and your family!

"Cookbook Corner" will feature a title full of slow cooker comfort-food dishes! America's Test Kitchen Slow Cooker Revolution (F09235) includes over 200 recipes that have been specially developed for slow cookers. The chefs in America's Test Kitchen have test-driven each recipe and made the necessary tweaks to make sure that you have great success with every dish. You'll love ideas like Tortilla Soup, Chicken Enchilada Casserole, and Nutella Bread Pudding! Don't miss this must-have book!

"David's Recipe" this week is in keeping with my focus on healthy comfort foods. If you love fun party foods...then you'll love my Turkey Taco Dip. It's a tasty layered dip that calls for healthy ground turkey instead of ground beef. We'll prepare this dish in a baking dish from the Temp-tations® Daisy 6-piece Oven-to-Table Set (K29547). I love that this is a no-bake dish and can be made ahead of time for your next movie night or big game party! We'll post the recipe on QVC.com.

"Food for Thought" this week continues my healthy cooking theme. I'd like to give you a few hints on how to cut down on fat in your cooking and how to begin to make better choices in what you buy. First of all, start reading labels in the grocery store. You'll be amazed at how much fat and calories are built into regular ingredients we buy each week. Be careful to also compare the amount of fat to the serving size. It may say that one serving of pepperoni has only 8 grams of fat, but the serving size is only 4 slices. Those calories can add up quickly. The next hint is to back off buying whole milk products and cheeses. If you can't go fat-free right away, try stepping down gradually. Try 2% milk or low-fat cheeses to begin with. In time, you’ll be able to go fat-free and not taste the difference.

So, here's your blog question for this week. What’s your favorite healthy comfort food dish? What do you make when you want to eat smarter, but also maintain great flavor and meal satisfaction? For me, it's whole-wheat spaghetti and turkey meatballs! It's filling, much lower in fat, and always delicious! Share your ideas and let's inspire each other to eat better and be more creative in the kitchen! See you Sunday!

Keep it flavorful!
