I write a lot on my blogs, FACEBOOK and INSTAGRAM about the home I’ve built in Pennsylvania. I thought it would be fun to give you a tour of my place in New York City.
In 1992 I bought a loft apartment in a former 100 year old printing factory in the Chelsea neighborhood of NYC. At that time, this part of town was pretty dicey - not the chic residential area it has turned into today. Well Joan thought I was NUTS. When I showed her pictures I thought she was going to cry! (She loved the finished project though!!)
It was a bombed out shell with broken windows, a toilet in one corner and a sink and stove in the other. Not inhabitable!!!
What the loft did have was beautiful maple hardwood floors, 14 foot ceilings, wonderful tall windows with a stunning southern view of the World Trade Center and more huge windows to the north facing the Empire State building!
I spent an incredible year and a half designing and building my future home. Because it was one giant open space with no walls, I was able to place all the rooms (kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, etc.) exactly where I wanted them.
I’m not sure where I found the time but I actually did some of the original construction myself!! (You can see what a wreck the place was from these pictures!!)
My taste has away been quite eclectic. While I clearly love modern and mid-century modern design, I also love the juxtaposition of the old and the new.
Looking into the library (with the Empire State Building view).
Color and high ceilings add a real drama to the loft.
A view from the library looking into the main living room. Modern touches mixed with classic furniture and traditional millwork… just my style.
An open gourmet kitchen with a large area to entertain guests was #1 on my list. I love food, cooking and love to have friends over for dinner and parties.
Before I moved to Pennsylvania (where I can seat up to 40!) my NYC loft still held 28 for Thanksgiving Dinner (my favorite family holiday!)
I couldn’t write this blog with a shot or two of my boy Roscoe enjoying his New York apartment!!
A prized possession is this pair of 18th century Staffordshire dogs. These were an amazing gift from Joan when I completed the apartment. We found them on a wonderful trip antiquing in England. (Ever since my sweet grand-niece visited this summer, I find these crazy toy dinosaurs everywhere!)
While most of the art I have collected over the years is in my home in Pa., this drawing by German American artist Richard Lindner (1901-1978) has always been a favorite and hangs in a place of honor.
I hope you enjoyed a tour through Roscoe’s New York City pad!!
