Celebrating National Love Your Pet Day

We regularly love to spoil our fur babies, whether it’s table scraps, an extra-long walk, their favorite treat, or just cuddling up on the sofa.   Our pets bring us so much joy, it’s hard not to spoil them and  National Love Your Pet Day is an unofficial holiday dedicated to exactly that. That being said, when celebrating our fur babies, I think about those who are still looking for their forever home.

Today I’m thinking about this holiday a little differently. I’ll spend time with my pets, but I’m also celebrating by volunteering/donating.  Twice a week, I volunteer with cats at a local shelter. I feed them, clean their litter, and simply keep them company while they wait for a home.

Here’s a look at my experience volunteering while in Pennsylvania:

First I prepare their food and get all the supplies together.

Then I move the kitties to a pen or another cage so they can eat while I clean.

(Note: The kittens pictured below got adopted together last week- YAY!)

Once all the chores are done its play time.

And I always make sure they each get individual attention. Robyn for example, pictured below, does not like being in the pen but she loves being carried. She’s been with the shelter for about a year waiting for adoption.

Today is a perfect reminder of why. I know many of us are passionate about our love for animals and volunteering/donating is a great way to help spread that. No matter how hard our day is or if it’s been the best day ever, the faces that greet us when we walk into our homes make all the difference in the world and I believe our time or donations can do that for the little ones waiting in shelters.
