Beauty Obsession: Highlighting

In the world of makeup there’s a lot of talk about highlighting, contouring, and even strobing, but if you’re strapped for time, what’s an absolute necessity? The answer: Highlighting.  Highlighting your skin has the ability to diminish unwanted texture, dark areas, and give the appearance of a healthy glow, all while masking facial complexities.

My absolute need for highlighter came when my schedule changed from 2 overnight shifts balanced with 2 day shifts, and an office day.  My sleep was and is still all over the place, with the biggest toll taken on my eyes.  The appearance of tired eyes is something I welcome on a daily basis, but the biggest pick me up will always be my favorite highlighter from Laura Geller.

Eyes are tricky, but if you’re looking to mask cross hatching, bags, or create more of a lifter look, highlighting is the way to go.  It creates a soft-focus finish that refracts light away from troublesome areas making them appear smoother and lifted.  Don’t get me wrong, you’ll still need your concealer to hide some of it, but highlighting is truly icing on the cake.

My obsession for highlighting doesn’t just stop at the eyes… If you want the look of sculpted, ethereal (yes, I’m using that word!) cheeks, blend your highlighter into your blush, followed by a hint of contouring under the blush.

If you want to look of fuller, lifted lips, apply a kiss (ha!) of highlighter above you top lip and watch the highlighter create the look of a more prominent lip line.

P.S. Highlighting is usually the last step in my makeup routine.
