If someone called you patient and wise, strong and persistent, powerful and intelligent wouldn’t you be flattered? These are some of the characteristics of the beautiful elephant.

I collect elephants, and have for a very long time. The elephant symbolizes different things for different people, but what I love is the elephant’s commitment to family, community, and deep and long-lasting love. These are two of my favorites.

My dad collects elephants too. We’ve been giving him elephants for so long that they cover almost every surface in his house! My dad says he loves their compassion, long memories, and connection to one another. His elephants are big and small, in glass, wood, and stone. Don’t you just smile looking at them?

In college I pledged Delta Sigma Theta sorority. Since 1913, Delta Sigma Theta women have been committed to academic excellence, community service, leadership and empowerment. Deltas also have a tradition of collecting elephants. Here’s a throwback picture of me and my best friend Timi. This is my first summer as a Delta.

As a symbol of strength, determination, and perseverance, the elephant is a great metaphor for our life’s journey. What’s the message? Onward!
