I get pedi,s every month or so and when the polish is removed there is that white stain that is left---always wondered what that was from and so I googled it and it is caused by the polish removing the moisture from your nail---it looks awful unless you polish it over again---so I tried to sand it off with a nail file --that didn't work, but vaseline rubbed on it does--takes the whiteness away and puts back the moisture. I broke my ankle in mid Oct and am in a wheelchair unable to get my toes done professionally for a few more months--but at least taking the old color off and using vaseline will make my toes look a little better. Just a little FYI--

Good to know about using vaseline! You & I had our broken ankles a couple weeks apart, how are you doing? It has been 5 weeks for me, go to ortho tomorrow and will hopefully go from boot to splint.

I get the same thing....I rub Argan oil on mine as well as my entire foot. It makes my feet so soft.

This happens to me also but only on 2 of my toe nails. I do not polish from October - April (unless the weather warrants a return to sandles!) to give my nails a breather. I use oils and lotions and in time the white spots go away.

Keratin protein is naturally white or gray in color. When you remove oils from your nails then that will allow you to see the natural color of the nail. Applying an oil or moisturizer on your nails makes them somewhat translucent so what you end up seeing is the nail bed underneath the nail itself. Same goes for hair. Hair is actually white or gray when there is no pigment in the keratin strands.

@wagirl Sorry to hear about your accident - hope you are healing well. Good info about the nails. I don't wear to polish from November-April so I will need to give this a try!

Well, I'll be a "son of a gun!"
Thanks for this thread & info!

@rockygems123 -of course--been looking for you to see how you are doing---it's been 6 weeks since I broke my ankle--went the dr yesterday for 2nd post op appt and can now start to put some weight on that foot , using the crutches and wearing the monster boot
got ok'd for physical therapy too--bones healing well but foot still looks a little gnarly--incision is closed and looks good and don't have to wear this boot to bed anymore--am so tired of this wheelchair tho---I go back to dr in 6 weeks---

Only my big toe becomes dry, brittle and discolored. I also don't polish between October and April but I do get a pedicure every month. Often the pedicurist is able to buff out the discoloration but if not it is usually gone by December after I continually moisturize.

I haven't polished in years, but I don't remember that being an issue for me.
