question about nail polish

I have been seeing someone for my nails for about 2 months. She has been putting nail shellac on my nails. It's different than the acrylics. The acrylics were really damaging my nails. I have to see another person for awhile since the first one is having surgery. The second one wants to use a gel polish and says it's exactly the same.

So, I ask you folks. Is shellac the same as gel?
