oh my goodness. let me say first , seriously, thanks to God for taking care of our well being the last 36 hours.
what a ride!
we had a pretty serious ice storm yesterday, and it seems oddly that the bulk of it hit our little town of 1300 people. there was ice , ice and more ice.
dh is on the emergency team for the town and was involved all day , most of the night, and most of the day today with operations. it was nuts, the police chief was calling on the radio for dh to bring HIM some chains because he couldnt go anywhere. now of course chains are illeagle in ill, but i guess in some circumstances .....
i was posting here yesterday afternoon, when the power went out. just gotten my and dd's showers, hair detangling and drying done, whew! and the temp started dropping quickly. after a while dh came home and turned on the generator, and we had power for a while, but i started smelling the exhaust from it and was getting really concerned.
told my mom, and she started freaking out , thankfully, because i might not have taken it seriously otherwise, worring that we were going to get co2 poisoning. so finally i turned it off after thinking i was getting a headache.
of course it could have been the headlight i had strapped to my head like a total dork! lol. and finally talked dh into just sleeping under all our comforters, so went to bed a little worried, but just letting it go as much as i could. with the freezing air pouring in through the cracks.
dh went back up town to help get elderly and those with oxygen breathing devices up to the emergency shelter. drove a girl and her 10 month old baby to a house 10 miles away that heat.
and i dont know how he weasled it, but the power guys patched us in last night to the electric, and we were able to run at half-mast all day today.
honestly, it was the worst storm i have ever been through. our town ,though small has more trees per yard than any town i know of around here. and they were all covered with ice. lots of ice. my poor maple tree in the front yard is literally lying in my front yard in pieces. i hope we can save the poor thing i love it so much, and it covers our whole front porch with lovely shade all summer.
i was standing on our side porch, which is covered by roof and talking to my mom on my cell , and i was like, oh there goes a branch, oh there goes a tree, oh there goes a giant limb, omgosh , there goes a giant tree.......on and on and on for like 6 hours. there were transformere exploding all over town and so many emergencies, that our fire trucks and ambulance people were literally running around in circles like chickens with their heads cut off.
one of the more worrisome nights i have spent, in my lifetime. but thanks God, we have electric right now, as it is going to get down to -2 tonight.
i have never in my whole life wished for an off the grid home, more than i have in the past 24 hours, and i wish i could write this and say i had a lot of faith that things were going to be o.k., but i didnt. i can only now, see in hindsight how God helped this whole town get through this with no major incidence and provided warmth and safety for us once again.
i pray that all you phil girls weathered the storm o.k.
thanks for letting me ramble, i am still spinning from it all. take care, dear friends,
