would YOU use a store tester to try make-up? No? of course not! why would you think women in shelters want your opened, USED makeup? and how do you possibly walk in and donate to battered women's shelters!!! they are in out of the way areas and hidden away and not easy to find for one important reason - so the men who beat them up cannot find them!!

You'd be surprised how many people think nothing of using those samples in Sephora! Skeeves me out. People also buy used cosmetics at garage sales all the time. {#emotions_dlg.ohmy}

And no you cannot walk into a Women's Shelter but it's easy enough to find a way to get things to them.

Yeah, I see women ALL THE TIME putting all full faces of makeup in Sephora and many, especially the younger ones, are not sanitizing the items. Scary!

If you go into my local free standing Sephora on an early evening Saturday, it's generally jam packed with teens doing their make-up for the night.

I'm going to admit that I do. But I always make sure that either the salesperson or I (or both) sterilize it with alcohol first. I've noticed that department stores seem to be much more conscientious about their methods of sterilization. A couple times recently, clerks have applied foundation for me. They went through what seemed to be a mandatory process that began with hand sanitizer and brush cleaning.

Am I wise to do this? That's a matter of opinion, but I'm just being honest.

ETA: But I would never think to donate used cosmetics. I will give it to my daughter or a friend, though, if they want it, after wiping it with alcohol.

I honestly think any liquid or cream in a tube or bottle is fine as long as it isn't a powder or pan typ. A liquid in a tube or bottle isn't going to be as easy to contaminate and yes, the reps I've watched before applying to customers alcohol the qwap out of it and use a new, clean slice of sponge to apply.

Okay, so I'll really gross you out. I test lipsticks in the store. There, I said it. {#emotions_dlg.scared}{#emotions_dlg.lol}

I can only tell you that NO shelter in my county will accept ANY OPEN CONTAINERS be it food, skincare, water, makeup, baby products, etc. I've worked then volunteered at my local DVC for more than 25 years; the CRAAP that is donated under the guise of "oh, I didn't want to throw it away" would disgust you. Then again, maybe not based on the theme of "well, they should be grateful for MY USED STUFF" that is often read/heard when it comes to this topic.

If you wouldn't use an open/used product (if you unseal something or use it to swipe on the back of your hand, IT'S USED), why do you think anyone else should? Because of your generosity?

Please.

If you can't use it, approach family members or very close friends. Otherwise, toss it.

I can't imagine any organization would accept opened / already-been-used makeup. If you feel guilty discarding barely-used stuff, compensate by making a monetary donation to a women's shelter or similar group.

Never would I buy any opened make-up. I got an eye infection from some brand new unopened (but it was an off brand) of eye shadow many years ago. So there is no way now I would buy something that was in someone's bathroom, purse, or anywhere having any kind of fingers touch it.

Sweet sentiment to donate but just not worth it to me.

thanks for the feedback everyone To answer the question, would I accept used makeup for toiletries, the answer is "yes", if I had no other way of obtaining higher end products. When you visit a Sephora or other department store and want to try a tester of something, they sanitize the item and we're good to go....don't see the difference.
