I completely agree with this! And "stronger" can be defined in many different ways- stronger in your faith, convictions, physical strength, mindset, motivation, etc..

People say this to make others who are going through difficult times feel better. It is not true. I will always be haunted by the difficult times in my life.

For me having the bad times sure makes the good times look better.

My dear late husband used to say, 'Enjoy the good times as they will not last forever. Get through the bad times because they won't last forever, either. Life is a roller coaster and we have to go with the ups and downs, do our best, and never give up.' To me, he was the wisest man I ever knew and I was blessed and honored to have been his wife. docsgirl

Good question. I think it's the idea that you give but you then don't expect any responsibility from the recipient.
For example, we provided funds for our daughter's college education but expected her to fund her to fund the costs of attending law school. We wanted her to be responsible in some way for her years of in college.
Does that make sense?
But again, I think there are types of hardships that crush people rather than make them stronger. I'm thinking of those in countries not as fortunate as ours. That's why I think it's a generalization.
I also think that we're all different in how we deal with major problems. Just because some may gain strength from them shouldn't reflect poorly on those who don't bounce back in that way.

It depends what you take with you from the hard times. I think one chooses if it will make you stronger or not. Bitterness and fear can keep you there.

So true. Great answer!
