The wigs on QVC all look awful to me in that there is no part and too much hair on the face, both at the bangs and sides. I tried a couple from QVC a couple years  ago, and indeed they were too hairy on the face. I now have so little hair forward of the back of my ears, I need to get serious about finding a wig. I don't know where to begin.

How much should I budget for a decent wig? Do all wigs cover the face? I live in a small town so we certainly have no wig stores, but would my best bet be to find a wig store in a big city? I was thinking about contacting our local hospital to look for a recommendation of a wig shop, not that I'd know what department to ask for.  If anyone has time to help me with my first steps, I would appreciate your advice.

Re: Would like advice on wigs

I will try my best to give you some advice.  Look on line at some of the popular wig sites.. Examples:  "Name Brand Wigs" "Vogue Wigs"  Wigs.com" "Best Wig Outlet".   They have hundreds of wigs and all different styles and colors.  That will give you some idea about what is available.  Wig sites frequently have sales so sign up for their e-mails.  Many have good return policies.  I suggest trying a wig similar to your own hairstyle and color.  I wouldn't suggest calling the local hospital. You are more likely to get help from your local "breast cancer support center."  There are many women who get wigs not because of health problems but because their hair is thinning,  I like to wear one when I am having a bad hair day or am traveling and want to get ready fast.  You can get a very nice wig for $120.  My favorite wig brand is "Estetica Designs."  If your purchase a wig that has too much hair you can take it to your hair dresser and have him/her cut  it to suit your taste.  Good luck.  Have fun with this.

Try various wig sites:  "Name Brand Wigs" "Vogue wigs" "Best Wig Outlet" "Wigs.com" "Wilshire Wigs."  Lots of pictures and hundreds to choose from.  Often have sales and free shipping and liberal return policies.  Start with a wig in a similar style and color as your own.  My favorite brand is Estetica Designs.  Many women purchase a wig because their hair is thinning and not because of a health problem.  Have fun!

It sounds like your best bet is to go to the big city.  The oncology dept at the hospital should be able to help with store names.  A hair dresser is another option.  I chose not to buy a wig when I went through chemo, but my friend did.  She wanted a good quality wig and paid close to $400.

Re: Would like advice on wigs

A top grade wig can cost hundreds of dollars, but it is possible to find excellent wigs under $100.  I am a wig wearer and have a wardrobe of wigs and not one of them cost more than $100.  As previously mentioned the Paula Young catalog (there is a website too) has a nice selection of wigs.  Some are human hair, but most are synthetic.  To be honest, I prefer the synthetics as they hold the style without setting and are easier to maintain.  Another site I like is Especially Yours (I think this is a sister company to Paula Young.  That site offers more wigs which mimic the appearance of natural or chemically straightened (black) African hair textures.  Some large independent beauty supply stores carry wigs, so if there are some in your area I would go in and try some wigs on before ordering anything. If you do order a wig online please carefully read, or call the retailers customer service, to clarify the return policy.  Not every retailer accepts wig returns.

I have seen Sherri Sheperd's wigs in person and I cannot recommend them. The hair texture is very slick feeling and looks like American Girl doll hair.  The cap is comfortable, and that's a plus, but not enough of one to buy those wigs.

Re: Would like advice on wigs

I wear wigs almost all the time. I have some from QVC that are great, and some from PY that are great.

I have a few that cost me $25 each, and they look so good that a friend of mine dragged me into a rest room and made me take it off my head before she would believe it wasn't my real hair.

To look good in a wig you HAVE TO play with it, just as you would if you were styling your own grownfromthescalp hair.

I learned A LOT from buying QVC wigs, and also from $25 Paula Young wigs.

I do not buy wigs with parts, because I think no matter how much you pay for them, they almost always look artificial.

I visited a very high end wig store before I started buying online, and the owner told me she HATED to sell natural hair wigs, because a good synthetic looked so much better and lasted so much longer.

I love my wigs. I hate to be seen without them.

Re: Would like advice on wigs

I lost my hair due to chemotherapy and I purchased 3 wigs during that time. I purchased the first one from a local wig store and I made a poor choice.  My original hair was pretty thin and fine and the first wig was too full so it didn't look natural.  Evidentally, I ordered a Toni Brattin wig from Evine (Item #304-540) and wore it 99% of the time.  It worked for me because it wasn't overly full and looked more like my real hair.  The quality may not be as good as more expensive wigs but, in my case, it was temporary.  This may be another possible option for you.  Evine sometimes reduces prices when Toni Brattin on on air.  Like QVC, you can return a wig to Evine for the cost of the original shipping and return shipping.

Re: Would like advice on wigs

Thanks a million for the replies. I was thinking a wig store because of sizing and looking at multiple styles. I spent some time reading tips, etc. at Paula Young website, and will check out the others suggested.

As I said, my hangup is excessive hair at forehead and sides toward the face. Nearly all the wigs in the Paula Young site seemed like that. I was wondering if that is a necessity to cover the wig cap. To me it is that feature that makes the wigs look unnatural.
