You do know people mean *the look* of black shoe polish, not *actual* shoe polish, right?

@TsukikoI saw someone at my physician's office last week with that exact same color. It was so beautiful that I mentioned to her how pretty she looked. She shared with me that it was actually henna. Loved it....
Cool! If anyone is interested I use mehandi.com's Rajasthani Twighlight.
@Tsukiko, I would like to try henna but not sure what color would work with both my gray/dark brown roots and previously dyed hair.

Hi Jazzbabe
I would go to Mehandi.com and either talk to a customer service representative or you can order samples of henna that you can test on leftover hair from your hair brush. I would think that the one I use, Rajasthani Twilight is the one that would work for you but I don't know what the color would look like on the previously dyed hair. The website is overwhelming with info but it's the best out there about henna. They also have free ebooks you might want to check out. I hope this helps.

It's dark and the vamp.. ok; He can still bite me I think he is a cutie at least back in the good days when you did not have to tell the kids to cover their eyes.

I am a dork!
I thought actual shoe polish. If someone said it I will take them at their word. Guess it is time to sign out.

I dislike one flat hair color whether it be a light color or a dark color. It never has any dimension to it and no one's natural hair is all one color so it looks especialy fake to me.
I dislike black colored hair period. 9 times out of 10 it looks like one used shoe polish to color their hair. I have a very good friend who colored her hair black for years. She finally lightened it up and OMG the difference is amazing. She was looking back at pictures recently and asked why I never said anything to her about her haircolor. LOL
You have to find a color that works well for your skintone. I see so many women who go blonde and they don't have the skintone for it and it looks awful. I remember a vendor who used to come on QVC and her hair was the exact same color as her skin. There was no contrast and it looked bad. She looked embalmed.
My hair is highlighted blonde and I have to be very careful to keep some dark in it. When it gets too blonde and I have no depth, I look very washed out.
Sing it, sister!

A few years ago I was noticing that my hair looked too dark. I had been getting the same color for years (dark brown with gold undertones to counter the redness in my skin). The redness in my skin has gone away considerably with the help of my derm, and my hair was now so dark that it was making me look paler than I was.
My colorist started lightening it a half shade at a time until we settled on a color I really liked. Then what she does is instead of highlights or pulling it through, she mixes up another batch a half shade lighter than the base and paints the ends. This gives it dimension and a little lighter around the edges.
Now if I can only get my sister to lighten her hair. She looks like death.
