Long ago I read that using a purple or blue shampoo too frequently will give your hair a purplish/bluish cast. It was explained that since our white hair has no pigment it's porous and will grab/asorb the color. Think back on those "blue haired ladies" of a certain age -- they were cited as an example of what results from over use.
My hair is pretty much white, but I wanted a Gwen Setfani white -- more polished, and when I used to color my hair it always seemed more full and looked healthier. I was warned against trying to achieve that because -- again -- the base color (purple or blue, depending on the shade) might be obvious.
I do use a purple shampoo every week or so, but no more frequently than that. ALTHOUGH, I have a friend who uses it 2 x week, so for her, at least, there's no problem.
I bet that streak is gorgeous!!

I use this shampoo because I have my hair highlighted and my hair has a tendency to pull gold. Using this prevents the gold/yellow. I used to use it daily and the only thing it did was make my hair very white through the highlights. I never had it turn my hair blue and my hair is extremely porous.

LD - which brand do you use? I have my hair highlighted as well and it tends to get ""brassy"" and my hairdresser said to use a purple shampoo (but no specific brand). I'm looking for some good recommendations.
Thanks a bunch.

Hi Pixie66. I use the Sally's version of Clairol Shimmer Lights.

It may vary by brand of shampoo and porosity of your hair, but yes, a "purple" shampoo can start to deposit blue in your hair. It happened to me, especially at the temples after a few weeks. So I cut back on how often I use the shampoo. Also reallized that my blush brush is tricky too, as I have had pink hair on occasion. Very embarrassing.

Hmmm... this is very interesting. I've used a purple shampoo for a couple years and never even thought that it might deposit a lot of the purple into my hair. I've used both Clairol Shimmer and the Pantene one - but I only use 2-3 times a week (maybe I should cut back?) and I leave it on my hair for 2+ minutes at a time. Anyway, my hair is totally light gray now -- the purple shampoo makes it really sparkle and shine. I love the look!

my hair is entirely white. I use a purple shampoo every other wash to whiten and brighten... it never comes out purple. I do only wash my hair once a week.

LOL, heavens no! I have silver gray hair, and use Jhirmack Silver Plus Shampoo (purple) every time I wash my hair, it brightens the gray/silver in your hair. Blondes can use too!

Since finding Pert shampoo I have used only that - it does not dye my hair green, it makes my hair soft and shiny and has the conditioner right in it, so no extra step. I have been happily using this brand of shampoo for years. Generally, purple shampoo is used to get yellow out of grey hair - if you don't smoke or be around smokers and you don't use a yellow shampoo you should not have yellow hair. In my experience those are the two things that make grey or white hair yellow. My first husband was a smoker and it definitely showed on my hair - after he died I noticed that my hair was not yellow anymore, and I did not need to use purple shampoo to brighten it. If I run out of shampoo and use DH's baby shampoo that is a dark yellow color - it will leave yellow dye in my hair.
Funny you mention Pert. I tried it years ago and, while it made my blonde hair soft, it did turn it green.

I use Blue Malva by Aveda 2 or 3 times a week which is a violet color but I wet hair, apply shampoo and lather. It removes yellow casts from gray & blonde hair.
