Will Purple Shampoo Turn My Hair Blue?

My hair has a dramatic looking gray streak near the front. A friend suggested that I use a shampoo that brings out the silver in gray hair. I bought Clairol Shimmering Lights Professional Shampoo. The shampoo is a deep purple color In the directions on the shampoo it says to leave it on for 3 to 5 minutes for maximum shimmer. My daughter said if I leave it on that long it'll turn my hair blue. I don't want blue hair! Has anyone used this shampoo or something similiar?

The purple shampoo will brighten any yellow in your haircolor, however if you use this every day the purple can deposit into your hair and make it purple.

I've started using John Frieda's sheer Blonde colour renew tone-correcting shampoo and conditioner. They're purple. They're to neutralize brassiness for blonde hair. That was my problem and I do believe it's working. In other words, "no, the purple won't turn your hair blue"....at least, it didn't do that to mine. Good luck!

My hairdresser recommended Shimmering Lights for my grey but said don't use it too often only one a week or every other week. Too much and it will turn your hair purple. Think of it as a treatment, not so much a shampoo.

Re: Will Purple Shampoo Turn My Hair Blue?

I've used Aveda's Blue Malva (purple out of the bottle) for about the last 18 months, alternating with my regular shampoo every 2-3 times. My dark brown hair went salt & pepper with a beautiful white streak in the front. The Aveda has not turned my hair purple or blue. But then, I occasionally have the pure white streak in the front of my head colored a bright purple, just for fun.{#emotions_dlg.laugh} I get lots of smiles about that.

Re: Will Purple Shampoo Turn My Hair Blue?

I have perfectly white hair and I used to use a purple shampoo all the time - it never turned my hair blue. Since finding Pert shampoo I have used only that - it does not dye my hair green, it makes my hair soft and shiny and has the conditioner right in it, so no extra step. I have been happily using this brand of shampoo for years. Generally, purple shampoo is used to get yellow out of grey hair - if you don't smoke or be around smokers and you don't use a yellow shampoo you should not have yellow hair. In my experience those are the two things that make grey or white hair yellow. My first husband was a smoker and it definitely showed on my hair - after he died I noticed that my hair was not yellow anymore, and I did not need to use purple shampoo to brighten it. If I run out of shampoo and use DH's baby shampoo that is a dark yellow color - it will leave yellow dye in my hair.

No, the blue color will not absorb into your white hair. The purpose of the blue (or purple) is to tone down any yellow, make the white whiter.

Does anyone remember 'blueing' instead of bleach for clothing? Much gentler than bleach, but removed yellow tones to make whites look bright. Same idea.

Thanks so much for all the replies it sounds like if I just use it once or twice a week I won't run the risk of blue hair. My hair does have a bit of a brassy cast to it and it does absorb color easily.

You may want to use it more often til you get the yellow out then cut back.

Alot depends on the porosity of your hair, if it is porous it will absorb the color molecules.
