Why wait 20 minutes after washing face before Retin-A

I recently started a Retin-A routine and use it every night. Most nights, I wash my face just before bed, towel pat dry, and then immediately apply the Retin-A.

I have no irritation from this routine. But I worry if it's reducing the effectiveness of the product. I forgot to ask the Derm about this at my last visit.

Does anyone definitively know why we need to wait 20 minutes after cleaning before applying the product?
