Every sunscreen or foundation-with-sunscreen I've ever used has instructions on the tube/bottle that states it is necessary to re-apply every 2 hours to be effective. I am not going to re-apply a foundation, or remove foundation to re-apply sunscreen, every 2 hours. Not happening.
I don't wear a separate sunscreen either because it makes my face too greasy and causes breakouts. I've gotten around this by using a finishing face powder with SPF. Probably not the best sun protection, but I can re-apply a face powder every couple hours over my SPF foundation.
The application after 2 hours should be done when you are in the direct sun because the UV rays chemically break down the sunscreen components. Otherwise, if you are staying mostly in a shaded area or indoors then once-daily application is fine.

In order to get proper coverage, you need much more than what you would use from your foundation. I use 1/2 teaspoon of my sunscreen on my face alone. No way would I use that amount of foundation. I would love to see a company come out with an SPF that lasts for 8 hours. Then we don'thave to worry about reapplying which I don't do. If I have makeup on, I don't reapply my SPF. I have not tried the powder sunscreens because I have very dry skin. I would look awful I would think.

@Tricolor I think the re-application is for when you’re actually in the sun, sitting at the pool or swimming. You probably would not be wearing foundation then anyway (at least “they” assume not.
I don’t actually sit in the sun. If eating on a patio for lunch, I wear a broad brim hat & choose the chair under the umbrella in the shade. If at the beach with the kids, hat, long sleeved shirt treated to be sun protected, no makeup, so can re-apply sunscreen.
Yes, I’m overly cautious. Each person has to choose their level of comfort.

UV rays to consider when you go outside include:
- direct sunlight
- reflected (off water, snow or any other object that can send it your way)
- scattered (comes through on a cloudy day or through untreated fabric shades or clothing)
I live at high elevation. Sometimes I go as high as 10,000 feet above sea level or more and the ground beneath my feet reflects a lot of UV rays. It's very important for me to wear sunscreen no matter where I go around here.
Elevation and UV...for every 1,000 feet of incline the UV increases by a factor of about 5% each increment. So at 10,000 ft above sea level that is a substantial amount of dangerous radiation.

@SilleeMee this whole subject is such a issue for me....I have rosacea so good sun protection is a must! But I don't live in a area with your elevation UV thankfully! Wow that is something.
My problem is if we were to go to say a tropical sunny location....that's a huge challenge. Sure I put on the required SPF and have the UPF50 hats and so on...but I need just a little foundation on as my rosacea is very obvious and it makes me very self conscious. I notice that the reflective sunlight is so powerful...say off the concrete or around water and sand...I feel like I need a face shield mask to truly protect myself. I know this isn't going to apply to most folks.
Normally I apply spf60 and then my foundation which also has spf20....and that's it for the day around here. I do reapply to my neck/chest/arms/hands thur out the day. With my super sensitive skin I couldn't be washing and reapplying foundation of any kind 2 times per day. My rosacea can't handle all that.

I first use my moisturizer with SPF and then my tinted moisturizer with SPF. I do not use an additonal sunscreen on my face. If I am not wearing makeup, I would use sunscreen. ![]()

I never use additional sunscreen with my foundation. Never felt the need for it.
BUT - I avoid any prolonged sun exposure and almost always wear a hat if I'm going to be where I can't avoid the sun.

@Shanus, I am rarely in the sun other than when I walk my dog. Other than that I am hiding in the shade somewhere. At one time I loved the sun. Not anymore.
