Why Do You Need Sunscreen on a Cloudy Day?

[ Edited ]

Even though this article is from 2012,  I thought the information was good and lets you know that even cloudy days you need sunscreen!  In fact the UV rays can be stronger on cloudy days!

@SeaMaiden  You can also get UV rays in the house sitting near a sunny window. My sunroom w/ floor to ceiling windows all around have plantation shutters that I can tilt to keep strong afternoon sun out. I’m still in the habit of wearing spf every day with or without makeup. Then if I decide to go out, lip gloss, blush, sunglasses & go.

@SeaMaiden  Thanks for posting this. There are many waterproof and sweat resistant SPFs that don’t need to be reapplied. Application to all exposed areas is crucial.

Yes, I have gotten burned on cloudy days, when I "treat" myself to no hat.  I do wear sunscreen, but it's not 100% effective.

@Sweetbay magnolia  Which one are you using that it isn’t effective? I’m as fair as Casper the Ghost & never burned with my sunscreen on.

I learned that lesson the hard way about 30 years ago.  It was very overcast, but my friend and I were on the beach at the Jersey shore.  It was dark enough out, that we were about the only ones on the beach.  I burned, blistered, and the blisters popped before I made it back to Manhattan.  It was agony.

Hi @ItsME. I use Neutrogena Dry Touch spf40 to spf70. Prefer spf70 in the summer. They now have spf100 that I just purchased. I stay w/ drugstore brands since I use so much & look for sales/discounts/coupons to stock up. I also use Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer w/ spf, but always apply the Neutrogena first on face neck and chest.

@Shanus  Thanks.  I was afraid you'd say Neutrogena!  I tried it several years ago, and got a chemical burn from it.  My face was covered in welts.  No more Helioplex for me.

@ItsME  It is trial & error to find the right one for your skin. My requirements were not too greasy since I use serum & moisturizer underneath and a tinted moisturizer as daily makeup. It also had to feel ok under my eyes.

On no makeup days going to the gym and quick errands afterwards, I use Skinceuticals Phycical Fusion UV Defense  Broad Spectrum SPF 50 water resistant and a universal tint (skin tone). Don’t see Helioplex listed, but can check online.
