I was wondering what is the best order for using a primer and moisturizer/ sunscreen for your face. I have read articles that state sunscreen and some that say primer first. I'm confused as to what to do.

I do skin care first.  To me sunscreen goes under skin care.  Then I do makeup.  Primer is for giving foundation a good base so I add that before my foundation but after skin care.

As far as I know, it would be moisturizer, then primer before makeup.  I like a moisturizer with spf. If my moisturizer doesn't have spf, I let my makeup with spf be it. I think Bare Minerals has a new primer with spf in it.

I've always heard that if it's a chemical sunscreen it goes on first.  If it's a mineral sunscreen it goes on after moisturizer.  A primer always goes on after everything and right before foundation.

My moisturizer has spf 30 in it so I put that on and then primer.  But if my moisturizer didn't have spf, I would put on the moisturizer, spf, then primer.

Angie of Hot&Flashy does moisturizer, then sunscreen, then primer, and then foundation.

To me, this is so confusing and people have so many different opinions.  I will never do all of these steps --- I'm just being honest!  It's just too much for me.  I'm not saying it's not the right thing to do or beneficial, but I just don't want to be bothered with it.  If I am going to be outside doing things or walking, I will apply a sunscreen, but that's it!

However many products you use, and no matter what order you use them, primer should be the last step before foundation. Primer is used to create a barrier to keep makeup from sinking into the skin. Your skincare will not penetrate if you use primer first.

Re: Which Goes First

[ Edited ]

I apply moisturizer with SPF, then primer, then  concealer.  Some dermatologists think that a moisturizer with SPF (preferably 30 or higher) is as good as using regular sunscreen as long as it's applied correctly.

There is continued debate about this, but SPF moisturizer works for me since I don't spend hours in the sun. Some suggest applying sunscreen even when staying inside but I don't buy that. Usually articles stating that are trying to sell products.

The order in which sunscreen is applied depends on whether it's mineral (physical) or if it's chemical (organic).

Chemical sunscreens need to be applied to clean skin preferably on top of vitamin C serum which protects the skin from free radicals produced upon exposure to UV light.

Mineral sunscreens are applied on top of all skincare products, including moisturizers, and under primers.

ETA-

Combination sunscreen products such as moisturizers or makeup containing SPF should be applied according to instructions given per product....instructions can vary.
