When rosacea is a misdiagnosis...

For years I was told the redness on my face was from rosacea. I had none of the breakouts associated with it. For the past week I had severe food poisoning and only washed my face...no anti-aging products, no makeup and my redness is totally gone. I wonder if irritation is the real reason there are now so many diagnoses of this condition....some of us just don't tolerate acids?

The ONLY thing I have used recently on my face is Trish McEvoy BB cream as a foundation every day. I wash with Purity twice a day. Almost ALL of the rosacea/redness has gone away. I am close to 60 and my skin has never looked better.

I wouldn't be at all surprised. Everyone - including doctors - seem to want the quick fix.

Redness - must be rosacea - let's give you a pill or a cream - rather than taking the longer tack of eliminating other things that could be the real cause of the redness - because that would be inconvenient and possibly take too long.

Re: When rosacea is a misdiagnosis...

Another thought.

I began having significant redness right before menopause - which continued after.

I never went to the doctor about it because I figured he'd want to medicate me - and I don't take medication unless I absolutely have to (I am on no prescription drugs at present).

I just used Clinique redness solutions to cover it up.

Well interestingly, I apparently got over it (I am doing nothing different in terms of eating or makeup). I am now 63 (menopause began at 50) and for the last year, I've had no redness to speak of.

Can't explain it, but glad it's gone.

Sooner, it's interesting that you also feel less is more. Dagna, I was prescribed Finacea. For awhile it seemed to reduce the redness until one day I woke up with a sunburn like rash. I agree about the over prescribing of drugs.

I always think this---especially when they say, "Avoid the sun, alcohol, makeup, spicy foods, hot beverages..." Come on! Impossible! I am very fair and the vessels are close to the surface and they are going to show easily.

The remedies don't improve things and the anti-biotics cause many more problems...

I agree and I also have a very fair complexion. And some of the medications....our insurance would never cover any of them because they claimed they were cosmetic.

Re: When rosacea is a misdiagnosis...

serenity, I've never had rosacea, but it is intriguing to me as to what it really is and what causes it, especially because I've read different things about it.

You mention acids...I can see that acids (and it is interesting when & how they came on the scene) may be more harmful than helpful, especially for younger skin.

When I was little I never knew of anyone or even saw anyone with irritated skin. (My Mom and all my aunts being the Ponds generation.) I'm sure there is a lot of confusing "information" and methods now that marketing of skincare products is so pervasive. It is also interesting that what was good for hundreds & thousands of years before is no longer accepted by many.

Now that you're on to something about your own skin, I hope you can find simpler skincare practices, where you don't have any more skin aggravation.

Thanks Harpa for your input. Yes, it does seem like a lot of women seem to have more issues with their skin than my mom's generation. My mom used Ponds cold cream and Revlon blush, she never wore foundation.... Her first dab of moisturizer came from Clinique when I introduced her to the product line when I was in college. She looked years younger right into her eighties and had beautiful skin...

Re: When rosacea is a misdiagnosis...

I was diagnosed with rosacea many years ago. The first thing my dermatologist said was to eliminate all products and start new with simple ingredient products. Less is more and stick with a simple skin care routine and be consistent with it. Never exfoliate and be gentle with your skin. I will not use acid, AHA, BHA, Vit C or Retin A, etc., on my skin because for me burning and redness on my skin is a warning signal that my skin is having a reaction and that it is irritated. I have fought the majority of my life to avoid redness and burning on my skin and I will not put a product on my face that I will have any kind of "burning or tingling" to eventually hope that it clears to beautiful skin. Sorry I'll take my chances with aging gracefully. I have yet to find anyone really having the answer to the fountain of youth. So for me, few and gentle products are the way to go.
