Re: When rosacea is a misdiagnosis...

I ordered the Skinn Naturals line (or whatever it is called from ShopHQ >>> Love Dimitri) and have been using that for about 2 weeks. I have had the butterfly mask/redness on my face especially when I get hot and when I get out of the shower. These products have really reduced my redness and I was just recently thinking that maybe just maybe all the other stuff I have been using has caused the redness that I have been fighting for years and have spent thousands of dollars on trying to cure/hide/remedy. I do really like my Alpha Hydrox Foaming Face Cleanser but I think I may just use it twice a week or so and see what kind of progress I can make. My aunt is 71 years old and she never let the sun hit her face (she is fair) and she has slathered Vasoline on her skin at night for years and she does not look her age at all.

I was diagnosed with rosacea many years ago. The first thing my dermatologist said was to eliminate all products and start new with simple ingredient products. Less is more and stick with a simple skin care routine and be consistent with it. Never exfoliate and be gentle with your skin. I will not use acid, AHA, BHA, Vit C or Retin A, etc., on my skin because for me burning and redness on my skin is a warning signal that my skin is having a reaction and that it is irritated. I have fought the majority of my life to avoid redness and burning on my skin and I will not put a product on my face that I will have any kind of "burning or tingling" to eventually hope that it clears to beautiful skin. Sorry I'll take my chances with aging gracefully. I have yet to find anyone really having the answer to the fountain of youth. So for me, few and gentle products are the way to go.

I wish I had done the same. My first introduction into skin care was Clinique clarifying lotion.Almost all alcohol and I remember the redness started then. When I went back to the counter and asked if redness was normal she told me it was exfoliation and to be expected...Sigh

I hope everything works out for you. I know what you mean about trying everything to relieve redness...I even considered laser but was fearful that if the tech made a mistake, it could have been a disaster.

Re: When rosacea is a misdiagnosis...

It seems products now are comprised of so many complicated ingredients and consumers are told by many reps to "layer" them...I think all that can lead to irritation. I have very fair, sensitive Irish skin and try to use single ingredient products whenever possible. Also I am careful to use products with a limited number of ingredients when I have to, i.e. for cleansing, etc. I agree with the previous poster who noted that our mothers' generation didn't seem to have these problems and skincare was so simple then. With all the products and devices out there, maybe we are tempted to do things our skin can't tolerate.

Re: When rosacea is a misdiagnosis...

Your post is interesting to me because I had a similar experience. I was getting redness on my cheeks several years ago and the heat seemed to intensify it. The dermatologist put me on Finacea but like yourself I never had any of the breakout etc. I used the Finacea for 2-3 years along with all sorts of lotions and potions-although I had cut back on them. I decided to switch to oils like argan and use a very bland skin cleanser as my skin has gotten quite dry over the years. My redness also went away and my skin feels very 'calm'.

Honestly I'm not sure if I have extremely mild rosacea that rarely shows or if I ever truly had it to begin with. It was suggested to me that I may have become sensitive to all the various chemicals/products I had been using over the years.

Re: When rosacea is a misdiagnosis...

IMO many women think they are caring for their skin when , in fact, putting all those chemicals on the skin, 24 hours a day is really doing it harm. I have a great complexion for my age of 65. i attribute it to good genes, but i also do not use anything but Dove soap and argon oil for skin care and only light MU. When we go to the pool I put on a special sunscreen for babies as i have reactions to regular sunscreen - and the instant we get home i wash it off. I read here all the time about ladies having problem complexions and breakouts from products. I would never put a new product right onto my face - always try it first for a few days on the inside of my arm.

Yes, I have the same ethnicity and I am very fair. I spent a lot of money on products that I often threw out. Luckily, I did do one good thing by staying out of the sun...

I think you are right about all the chemicals having a negative impact on our complexion.

I think it just proves how everyone should do what works for them. I tried Jose's argon oil and looked like I had a sunburn the next day. Another thing I learned is that my face reacts differently to products than my wrist does. But thank you for your input, happy housewife. You are definitely right about the chemicals being an issue for some of us in skin care.

Re: When rosacea is a misdiagnosis...

I was diagnosed with Rosacea a number of years ago, which is also referred to as "adult acne". All my growing up years and through adulthood I never had the first problem with my skin until about 10 years ago. I used Pond's cold cream some when I was younger, but usually just washed with mild soap and water most of my life and used an inexpensive moisturizer. My Mom had great skin and passed it on to me.

I started noticing that my face got extremely red and hot when working out in my yard, especially in the sun. It did the same thing if I got very excited, or angry, etc. I was not having any breakouts at the time. The thing that sent me to the doctor was my eyes - they would burn, sting, and water sometimes to the point that I could hardly open or close them. Since I was having the redness, I went to the dermatologist who said she was 99% sure it was Rosacea but wanted to send me to the eye doctor. There is a test they can do because the eye problem can be a symptom of Rosacea, and he confirmed it. A lot of people aren't aware of this if the eye problem is not as severe as what I experienced.

My dermatologist put me on an antibiotic for one month, then Finacea one or twice daily. I used only Neutrogena, Olay, or Cetaphil foams/washes for sensitive skin for cleansing, and Olay or Neutrogena moisturizer for sensitive skin. For my eyes, I first used a gel and now I use only artificial tears once or twice daily. I don't use expensive makeup - I can use L'Oreal mousse type makeup, and I do like Bare Minerals original. I've found that I like Philosophy's Purity, but "Hope in a Jar" irritates my face, so I went back to the Neutrogena moisturizer. I've always had great skin, thanks to my Mom's genes, and everyone says I look a lot younger because I have few wrinkles on my face at 70. I seldom have any kind of breakouts now, even though I don't use the Finacea on a regular basis. DO use sunscreen on your face!

I will say to anyone who suspects they have Rosacea, they do need to get a proper diagnosis. If left untreated, in some people it can wreak havoc on your face over time, including getting bumps on and around your nose which can make your nose appear "bulbous". This is rare but it does happen. Clogged pores can also become a real problem. I met a woman several years ago who was younger than me, and I knew immediately that she must have untreated Rosacea, but I couldn't bring myself to say anything because I didn't know her well.

Just make sure you get it properly diagnosed as soon as you suspect it, and hopefully you will never have any really bad problems with it.
