I've been reading a lot of posts about the seasonals and 613 having more protein than the other formulas. I love both and recently purchased 2 sets of the last TSV (Wen for All Seasons). I find I can use any of the formulas with ease and my hair is always the same (in a good way). I usually do the first cleanse with Tea Tree and the second with either a seasonal or 613 and that as a leave in.

However, out of curiosity I was wondering how one can tell if they need more protein in their cleansing conditioners or when they use too much?

Well, I can't answer your question about how you can tell if you need protein, but I can tell you what my hair feels like when I have too much protein. It starts breaking, is uber-dry and unmanageable, gets tangled (especially at the ends). It's almost as though my ends get glued together - I had to occasionally cut my tangles out because it was the only way.

I've been using Wen exclusively for about three years, so my hair is "all Wen" and is in excellent condition. It wasn't until I grew out all of my "shampoo" hair that 613 and the seasonals started giving me problems. Now, if I use them too often, my hair becomes dry, brittle and tangles easily (which it never does normally). It takes about four or five cleanses with the core formulas before my hair returns to normal. Tea tree is my absolute favorite CC, I use it religiously for my first cleanse (and often for my second). I also really like Sweet Almond Mint (especially in winter). I use Lavender pretty often and also Cucumber Aloe in the summer.

I generally don't have to worry about having too little protein, since I enjoy the scent of 613 and the seasonals......I try to use them once or twice a week. I think I've read that other posters have noticed their hair doesn't hold a curl/style if they're lacking on the protein.

Hope this helps!

Thank you Colonel Meow & DoxieMomma! Although I've been using Wen for 4 years (off & on) I never really knew when/if my hair needed more protein or not. I guess I would know if I had too much which thankfully I haven't had issues with. Loving Wen and my hair is so so happy to be back to it. I also recently converted 2 friends to using it. Still trying to convert mom but she still loves her lather and thinks that if it doesn't lather it's not clean. No worries, I'm trying to show her the Wen ways ?? Thank you again!

Megan, If your hair needs protein it's just the opposite of what the other posters described when they overload on protein - it's too soft, mushy, no bounce, soaks up water so takes longer to dry than normal.

I have been using Wen for 2 1/2 years. I find that rotating the core formulas and the cc's with protein works best for me. I use tea tree for my first cleanse daily. I use the core formulas most of the time. I cleanse daily. I use the seasonals once or twice a week. I use 613 about every two weeks as a treatment. If my hair gets too much protein, it gets very dry and strawlike. However, my hair does respond well to protein when it needs it. I use 613 always after I get my hair colored. I think it's just about finding the right balance for your hair. Hope this helps.

Thank you okiebug & Hilary77! I guess I'll know if my hair has too little or too much protein but luckily I haven't had any issues with using 613 and the seasonals. I know Anna Lee (of Chaz Dean Studio) always tells me to use the 613, but wondered if consistently using it would be too much so I like to mix it up. Well I like the other formulas as well. So thank you again for all your wisdoms!
