Recently Ihave been reading that when you buy boxed haircolor you should go 2 shades lighter than what the box says so you hair won't comeout too dark.
Do you think this is true? I have never done that I have been always buying the same color Natural Instincts #20 brown and this time it came out so dark. I don't know if the formula changed or what. Now I finally have it gone and now I am considering just going to a salon to see what color they would use.. Which I have never done. Do you thaink salon color looks better than boxed color? Thanks

I've been using Clairol Nice n Easy for years. Using a light blonde. They did change the "numbers" and maybe the formulas a couple years ago, But I was able to find the one most like this:

I have never dyed my hair. But I am just mentioning this because most of my friends have their hair dyed at a salon or do it themselves.
A friend who dyes her own hair, was having trouble with the color. She called the company's phone number listed on the box of hair dye. She said the person was so helpful. And what she ended up doing was buying 2 different shades of dye to get the color she wanted. She was so pleased with the the help she received.
Also, I often hear about highlights and lowlights. And especially since it is summer. Maybe your hair is a bit lighter from being in the sun and that is why the hair dye looks darker?

One of my friends has brown hair and she colors it herself and she found that to be true. She was going by what looked to be her color on the box and the color came out really, really dark. So, she told me she now goes a couple shades lighter and gets a better result.
As for myself, I haven't colored my hair for awhile but I used blonde shades. I did go to several salons for coloring and never liked the results. I started doing the color myself and liked it much better. So, I think personal experience varies.

I've been coloring my own hair for years after not having good results at the hair salon. Each time I went to the hair salon my hair would be a different color .....and this was after paying a lot of money. Since then I've been using Nice N Easy. I will say when they changed their numbers a few years ago I didn't know what number to use so I tried a few.....can't say I see a big difference in any of them near the same number. Very gradual change between them. I buy the boxes when they are on sale and I have a coupon. Can usually color my hair now for $3.50.

Yes @cuddlesmama . I use Revlon Colorsilk to cover the minimal gray in my hair. I use a lighter color to achieve the color I need. I use Light Golden Brown or even Lightest Golden Brown to achieve a rich warm brown color.
If I used a medium brown, it would come out way too dark.
