@Sunshine Kate Sometimes they put me under a dryer, sometimes they don't.
@henderson and @Sunshine Kate My natural hair is dark black, but very little of that exists, mostly at the back crown and the back underneath, and the rest is now salt and pepper (I grew it out during the pandemic, so I know). I decided to go blonde, like a Tony Brattin hue, because the gray growth shows less with that color. The colorist applies the ash blonde hair color and bleach highlights , the less experienced or cautious in 2 steps, but my best colorists do it in one step. Doing 2 steps means having to dry the hair between the 2 processes. My understanding is that the heat from the dryer while the color is on is to open up the hair cuticle to accept the color, which is probably good for me. My grey is color resistant, so I prefer that. My color doesn't fade, i just have to repeat this process because my hair grows, which is good! The colorist just does the roots. I have dry hair and don't need to wash that often. Maybe that helps the color last.
I would not do low lights. Why all that processing? Maybe look for a slightly darker base color and do highlights. They can remove only some of the foils at a time (and rinse), and get color variation that way. I had one colorist that wanted me to do all kinds of processes, but she did charge me a lot for each. So I left for a different one that gives me the results I want at fair prices.

My hair is about 50% gray. My natural haircolor is very dark brown. I get highlights and lowlights. The problem I have is that after about 2 shampoos my hair looks horrible. It's like the color washes away.
She doesn't have me sit under the dryer. That's why I asked the question.
The color shouldn't be horrible. Tell her you think it's horrible and can she use a toner. They charge extra for that, so make sure to ask for it as a corrective measure., so they don't charge you for it Some colorists use them in every process, some don't. My earlier post spoke about how I avoided the 2 shampoos. You may want to look for a different salon. Different stylists have different skills. I realized that colorists did it 2 different ways when my regular colorist was out, and someone else filled in. She told me she wasn't comfortable doing color and highlights at the same time, and would I mind if she did it separately, shampoo in the middle. So obviously, that takes longer. That salon used toner and my hair looked nice, so no complaints except for the extra time at the salon.

I have been put under the dryer in the past. However, at my current salon, I have not. I think it might depend on the products? Come to think of it, I don't think I have even seen a dryer at this salon. LOL.

Some gray hair does not hold color. I color and highlight my hair a medium blonde.
One small section does not hold color. My stylist told me its common. Grey hair has no melanin and is more porous, it can't hold color.

@ellaphant @Sunshine Kate Yes, that is the problem I have with most hair color and should have mentioned before. Can't use semi-permanent. When I colored at home, only one type of color would take, and I really couldn't do a good job, which is why I go to a salon. I have never had problems with color taking at the salon, as long as the colorist leaves the color on the necessary time, which is about 10 minutes longer than regular customers. Usually, colorists are very careful, sometimes they rinse a strand of hair to see if it's ready, and if not, they put color back in, and wait some more. My hair needs like 10 more minutes longer than the standard. I am thankful for the care they take and tip accordingly.
