exactly. I've never understood the fascination with "celebrities". They perform a job that I may or may not enjoy (a movie, a song, a tv show). That is about the extent of my "relationship" or "connection" with them.

I like the stars who seem to like people a lot, like Justin Timberlake and Ellen Degeneris. Cameron Diaz seems nice, just can't get past the fact that she was involved with A Rod!! I don't blame people for enjoying their success and spending money, but the ones who are over the top with it disgust me. Some successful people manage to remain humble and grateful and shun publicity. I am not influenced by stars and their political views or their smug feelings of superiority about their personal values. Rosie O'Donnell comes to mind, even though she seems to have slipped from the radar. I guess I like actors who view their work as a job and are professional about it and don't think they are from some privileged class of people who are entitled to royal treatment. There are a lot of fine people in the sports professions, also. Many golfers and former stars like Andre Agassi are in that category. I respect talent and gifted people, I just prefer the ones who seem kind and retain humility and are grateful what they have achieved.

If a talented entertainer shows humility, humor and generosity -- and doesn't constantly go through personal meltdowns -- I generally think well of h/her. Entertainers are just as imperfect and insecure as the rest of us, but their lives are under a microscope. There are some entertainers I would enjoy having hot tea or coffee with - but not to gush or get an autograph. Just to chat and absorb their travel and other famous people experiences. With today's intrusive media, I think half-wit entertainer jerks phase out quickly.

I met Garth Brooks at spring training baseball camp in Surprise, Arizona. He was working out with the Royals' team and getting charity endorsements for his kids' program. He signed autographs and chatted with people after each practice. What a guy! His uniform was grass stained and he was dog tired, but he said he would sign autographs for seniors and kids first, because it was hot that day. The in between ages are stronger and can take the heat. We were in between age and he called my teen daughter back home and told her to be good and get her homework done. She'll never forget that. He chatted with my husband like an old friend. And to think....he could have walked back to the locker room and no one would have blame him. There are some good entertainers who have kept soft eyes, good hearts and humility -- just like the folks we meet each day.

Great story, Ury. I had a similar experience when I was younger. I was born in Chicago and my dad was a diehard Cubs fan. The 1969 Cubs were my team; I was nine and Ernie Banks was my hero. My sister and I stood in line for hours, outside Uptown Federal Bank, just to meet first baseman Banks and catcher Randy Hundley. The line was longer than anyone had expected, and Ernie and Randy had put in their time. But they stayed and they shook every sticky, sweaty hand of every little kid in that line before they left that day.
I'll never forget that.
Today, I really can't say I watch professional sports. The bad behavior of so many of the players has been disappointing. I tune into the Little League World Series when I want to see sportsmanship.

When I was young (I'm 67) my best friend and I used to write letters to our favorite movie stars (that's what they were called back then). James Garner (Maverick) at the time was one of my favorite stars. I'd get sent autographed pictures. Back then they'd always send back 8X10 pictures autographed.
I've often had pretty good luck with hearing from someone I've enjoyed (personality).
Years back (in around 2002) I read all of the books by Clive Cussler (he's always on the best seller list). I wrote him a fan letter. Guess what? He and I started responding. He actually sent me several hand written pages from some of the books he'd written that were best sellers! He'd send me letters (all handwritten) answering some of my questions (like who were his main characters based on). Lots of things about his cars.
I had/have the address to one of the houses he owns where he spends most of his time. He even included his phone number (I've never called it because I felt like it was an intrusion). My best friend's brother is also a fan of his. I gave most of the letters and pages from the transcripts to him. I kept two letters for myself.
I wrote a short fan letter to Kevin Spacey when he was in a play in Washington, DC (near where I live) telling him how much I like his work and that my family always teases me because I like him so much.
He wrote me a short note (by hand) and sent me a picture (fan picture) with written across it "insert real name, "Don't pay any attention to what your family says. Thank you for your support...Kevin".
I've been published (very small articles) in the Washington Post newspaper and I was an editor for my college newspaper (I mention this because maybe they answer me because they like the way I write).
I appreciate the celebrity for what they've accomplished.

I DO NOT connect with celebrities. Thank goodness.

No, and I do not want to... I have enough friends & family
to "connect" with...

I don't connect with any star or celebrity and am not impressed or overwhelmed with their awesomeness.
